Where did you buy the replacement plastic housings? I wanted to get a spare, but only find the metal ones online. I'd rather have the plastic one. Did you have to go to the dealer? How much did they cost? Thanks!

Gonna love when these guys who bitch about the dealers and now will do it themselves, bitch the next time they go and take it off themselves. It’s definitely the swelling. I did my first oil change myself at 5k, was a bitch to get it off for me. I put it on myself and hand tightened it. Was a bitch getting back off again. While there might be a few idiots at different dealerships overtightening them with a breaker bar or something most just put them on hand tight.

In my chainsaw it has a plastic gas cap. I could barely get the thing off because it was so swollen. Was even harder to get back in once I removed it. It’s actually because of the ethanol in the gas. Switch to no ethanol gas and the swelling stopped drastically. Doesn’t mean it can’t still swell from the heat and cold.

I have a taco and my wife has a Camry. First oil change I replaced the plastic with aluminum canisters, so I have 2 plastic ones that were taken off only once.
I change my own oil every 10000 miles or so (AMSoil 5W-30) and next oil change (at 15000 now) will have a Baxter adapter to get rid of the stupid cartridge. Keep in mind, Toyota went to cartridge style for THEM to save money, not because is better.

Why so testy? I like the adapter that you purchased. It looks like a quality part.

My remark was regarding the anti drainback statement that you made.

I stated a fact, not an opinion regarding anti drainback of filters.

I agreed with you in that the anti drainback feature is good if the filter is horizontal or upside down. It does not help if the filter is open side up like on the Tacoma.

The Tacoma is about my 40th vehicle. Most of my vehicles have had regular spin on oil filters, which I liked just fine.

I’ve installed remote filter adapters on a few vehicles where the filter was difficult to reach and or remove, or where removing the filter allows oil to pour all over suspension parts, requiring a bunch of rags to clean up the mess.

If one wants to make the removal of a Tacoma spin on filter even easier, a remote filter adapter plate and locator allows the oil filter to be placed behind the grill, allowing you to just reach down behind the grill to remove your spin on filter.

That’s even easier than removing a skid plate, removing a skid plate hatch, or drilling a hole in a stock deflector plate for removing an oil filter.

Looks like there’s space on the opposite side of the aftermarket transmission cooler.

Edit: An inexpensive universal kit at a decent price (way less than 400-500 dollars) would be great if possible for adapting to the cartridge mounting location.
    I’ll look for something economical.

It adds about 1 1/2 inch to the overall length of the filter. Plenty of room to clear the skid plate, but yes you need to pull it to access filter in the same way as the canister. Filter I use is WIX 51348 which is about 3 1/2 inches long. Think I paid $6.45 for it from Amsoil where I buy my oil.
