I'm changing the the automatic transmission filter on a 2004 Tacoma. The kit came with a gasket. Some type of rubberized sealant was used on the pan-to-engine block. Should I use RVT on the pan-to-gasket and gasket to engine block?

what type of gasket? cork or rubber? I'll take my chances with rubber and make sure you torque to spec.

The factory setup uses FIPG, which is Toyota's RTV. I would chuck the gasket and use FIPG if you can get it or a high quality RTV such as Permatex ATF gasket maker.

I thought Toyota used FIPG (Form In Place Gasket, 00295-01281 if it's orange or 00295-00103 if it's black) on the pans. That's their silicone RTV. The pan typically has a groove stamped in it for the FIPG to sit and Toyota will show in the book where it goes on the lip.

Every time I've used it the stuff sealed like crazy. Make sure to clean everything and torque carefully, it'll be like 65 INCH-lbs. If there's a rubber gasket I might use it but if it's cork I'd probably punt it and use FIPG.

It looks like some sort of rubberized felt.

I have Permatex Ultra Black Hi-Temp RTV silicone gasket maker.

It was orange FIPG. Yup, I'll torque the bolts to 6 ft-lbs.

that toyota stuff is really tacky, REALLY. I used the tool they provie to spread it out after I put a bead down. Before pouring transmission fluid back in I let it cure overnight, probably 24hrs.

Removed all the old RTV and put a thick bead of Ultra RTV (no gasket). Torque the bolt to 7 ft-lbs. Letting it cure overnight. Filling it MaxLife.

I did mine with the rubber gasket and used a few drops of RTV. Just to hold it in place.
I put the RTV on and waited like 5 mins for it to get real tacky then set the rubber gasket on.
Installed the pan. Only finger tighten the screws. Went inside and eat lunch for 30mins came back out and torque them down to maybe 6 ft lbs. Filled it up with Toyota ATF.

    No leaks for me.
