The transmission in my 2006 Tacoma Pre-Runner quad cab appears to be a sealed unit? How difficult is it to change out the transmission fluid? What is a reasonable price for it to be done at a dealer or independent shop?

I think I paid $300 at the dealer for a full flush. Not bad for something I likely won’t have to do again.

On a 16 year old truck I'd drive it till it dies and then get it rebuilt. There is a slight chance that changing it at this point will lead to the transmission dying sooner than later. Almost zero chance it will help anything.

I did a Drain & Fill @ 100k miles when the truck was 11 years old.
I haven’t had any problems. I really don’t think a Drain & Fill would hurt the truck.
I also do t think it would help much, unless the fluid is low.

The real question is, how many miles are on the truck.
And are you comfortable with a “small” possibility there could be problems after?
