i am reading thru my tacoma manual...rear differential is 3.12qt and transfer case 1.1qt

just saw the manual... it says... 75w-85 recommends for toyota trucks... I notice you guys putting in 75-90, I guess that's ok?

hey Chris I did my diff fluid change and used 80-90 gear oil in my 2005 trd off road it says to use 75-90 is this a big issue using the 80-90 and it is non synthetic, the guy at the parts store says all 75-90 is synthetic now??? thank you for the great write up too.

You can buy 75-90 non-synthetic, but it's not that common anymore in auto parts store. Besides, if you are going to run 75-90, you might as well run synthetic. As far as I know, running 80-90 in a Tacoma rear diff is fine. I'm sure Chris will have more info when he chimes in.

Yep. 80-90 is fine, just change it out at 15K instead of the 30K in the manual. Next time you change it, run the synthetic stuff. :)

I recently changed my diff oil to royal purple 75-90. all seems fine except for when I drive the truck after it has not moved for a couple days. At full lock, when turning at slow speed, I get a bit of chatter. After the initial chatter, it does not happen again. I thought it was just due to the oil settling and not lubricating the clutch plates well. I also notice that the tires chirp more when I turn from a stop. The royal purple was suppose to have the LSD additive already in it, but I am thinking about adding additional friction modifier. Would this be a good idea to add friciton modifier to a lsd oil that is suppose to have it already?

I think more could make the chattering worse. In my testing, I added up to 12 ozs. more (with Mobil 1 gear oil), and the chattering got progressivly worse. I have found the best results useing a standard non synthetic gear oil, and the 4 ozs. of friction modifier. You just have to change the oil more often is all.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was not sure if the occasional chatter is normal or not. Is the chirping of the tires from a stop something that is directly associated with the diff fluid? It hasn't gotten any worse in the past 4k miles I have put on the truck so I am not sure if it was something to worry about. Would there be any problem switching from a synthetic diff fluid back to conventional gear oil?

Switching fluids isnt a big deal. Also, the chirping I dont think is an issue either. Mostly an anoyance if anything.

That should be fine, but I noticed you have a TRD sport, so I believe you will need a limited slip additive as well.

I own a 2007 DC LB TRD SPORT and have reached the 30000 mile interval . I would like to change the front, rear and transfer case diff. oil but it has gotten kind of confusing on what to use where!!! So let me get this straight-- 1-I can use synthetic 75W-90 in the front diff or Hypoid oil without the LS additive.. 2- Do not use Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic in the rear diff (I bought Mobil 1 LS lubricant 75W-90 which clearly states that it is for LS differentials). I can use reg 75W-90 hypoid oil with the 4oz. of LS additive. Can I use all 7 ounces? # 3-- How do I change the transfer case oil and what type of oil do I use?

Mobil 1 is fine in the manual tranny, transfer case, and front diff. Use the oil and addative in the write up here for the rear diff.

How simple is it to change the transfer case oil? Are there any pics in doing this?

Its as easy as the rear diff. Take the fill plug out, then the dran plug, drain oil, put plug back, and fill till oil comes out the fill hole.
