The light eventually went out when the original cap was put back on. That was on a couple of Nissans. I would expect your Toyota to do the same.

I went to my uncle's house and he hooked up his diagnostic tool. The trouble code was P000?? I didn't get a chance to write it down but it said "Large vapor leak" or something to that effect. So he cleared the code and we'll see if it comes back. I'm returning the gas cap tomorrow since I find it to be the culprit.

Good write up, but apparently there are some issues with locking gas cap security.

It seems the proper fix would be to add a locking fuel door. Which could always be defeated by a lever of some sort if someone really wanted to get at the fuel system.

But I am surprised no one has come up with a fix for adding a locking fuel door. So,..someone hurry up and produce a solution to this anomaly that utilizes the ignition key.

    That's an order!!!

No. Its just a standard magnet to keep the door in the closed position while its unlocked. The hinge on the door has a natural tendency to rest about 1/16" to 1/8" away from the body so I put the magnet on to make sure the plunger and latch will line up when armed.

I put it on the marketplace to see if there is any interest for something like this. If there is then I will make more.

Stant caps are junk. A customer lost a key and came in to buy a new one. I went outside with a pair of channel locks twisted it loose, the exterior of the cap broke off, I then removed the inner valve and the piece that goes into the filler neck and put her new cap on all within 30 seconds.

Locking door is a much better idea BUT remember a lock only keeps honest people out.

One of our frequent commercial customers was getting his diesel fuel sucked out of his tow trucks at night. They are the big tanks right by the doors with the big flat round cap. He went out, placed some razor blades under the cap and tightened it down so the blades stuck out. Went in the next morning to find blood stains going from the cap and out the driveway.

Hasn't had any diesel fuel siphoned since :D

Tried ordering the Stant 10504 or 10509 from Amazon, but said neither fit my 2014 Tacoma. Amazon recommended the Gates 31780 instead, which I purchased. Installed ok and seems to work and lock fine, and came with 2 keys. No Check Engine light after 200 miles of use. I like the clutch action on the Gates when screwing it on.

I put a STANT locking cap, model #‎10504, on my 2014 AC V6 MT about 2 months ago.

I get sporadic "check engine / TRAC Off" lights on dash, always the same two codes: P0441 and P0454, which are gross EVAP leak codes. Usually the codes come a couple of days after doing a full-tank fuel up.

If I take special care to be sure the cap is on as tight as possible it seems like the codes come less often. I suspect the inner ratchet mechanism that is supposed to prevent overtightening may be marginal -- sometimes it torques enough for a tight fit, other times it doesn't get tight enough & throws codes.
