This is what I get for putting on cheap shocks. At the time it was what I could afford, though. Any suggestions on a good replacement?

Even spendy shocks can do the same or similar, your not alone. The trick is finding the good cheap ones,,lol. These went on the back in Oct of 2014. Much better shock than the old Rough Country shocks. They were $78 for the pair in 2014,,now $83. Decided to pull them off a few months back to inspect,, Big mistake. They still have every PSI of 200 they are loaded with.

Much better than the OEM and the super duty Bilsteins they replaced.

These rough country shocks look nice. Price is right also. looks like they may lift the rear a little bit also.

How long ago did you put them on? I'd take that back to the store you bought them from and get a new one, if I was hurting for funds. Breaking at a weld point like that is a defect, so I'd try to get it warranty'd.
If I was really desperate, I'd just weld that one back together, haha!

I'm good on funds now but at the time I purchased them a few years ago I was low.

With how old these trucks are that would be like buying a used condom. A complete set of 4600 Bilsteins on Amazon are $362 shipped. If one looks around they could be had a little cheaper. If the OP was local I have a set of Tockico's with about 3k on them that they could have for free

I've looked at those Bilsteins. The reviews seem pretty good.

Never weld or use heat on a shock-they can explode and cover you in hot oil.An experience you do not want

Bilstein 5100's w/ Eibach coil overs in front (set at 3" of lift). Front diff drop kit. Extended Bilstein 5100's in the rear. Deaver 2" AAL in rear w/ axle shims. 285 x 75 r 16 Goodyear Duratracks. Wheelers steelies type B, AFE cold air intake. Sway bar delete. Just so you are aware, Changing shocks will not lift the vehicle.

I've welded them before. Maybe I just got lucky, but I didn't have any issues with it. Fully extended the shock, wrapped it in a wet towel, and ran about 1/2 inch mig bead at a time with solid-core. In between beads I dunked it in a bucket and let it cool off completely, but the tube never got hot enough to even be uncomfortable to touch.

It's not anything I'd do now, because I've discovered Rock Auto and cheap shocks are all of $10-20 on there. But as a broke high-school kid before the days of the internet I did it.

My Monroe Sensatracs did the exact same thing a couple weeks ago. One went first and then the extra stress causes the other one to break following day. Now I ride Bilstein 4600s and man, the are just the best.

Any difference between the yellow Bilsteins and the 5100's besides lift?

The valving is supposed to be the exact same. 4600 are simply non adjustable.

if you install a rough country 3" lift can you just use the factory OEM rear shocks instead of the rough country shocks ?
