check if maint req'd light is working

Hi. I have a 2007 5 lugger I bought used and have driven about 4000 miles. When I bought it they gave me the manual for a 2006, so I'm not sure if I'm checking the light functioning properly. It says to set the parking brake, open the door, close the door, and then turn key on. The maint req'd light (and other mils) should turn on for a couple seconds if they are working. My maint req'd light doesn't come on. Can someone confirm that this means it isn't working?
