I'll chime in- always good to have encouragement. I had a physical in February and my doc was like "You really want to head into your 50's being obese? Cause you just crossed that line". That was it- I had enough. I'm 6' tall and my ideal weight based on my build is around 180-185lbs. I weighed in at 240lbs during that physical.

I started using myfitnesspal in March and watching my calorie intake. I set a goal for 1,500 calories (net) per day. I cut out ALL alcohol (ouch). I eat three square meals a day, 2 snacks. A lot of fruit and veggies, lean protein (wild game, chicken and fish). And I started walking a lot.

I made it a priority to walk/hike every day. I work from home 2 days a week, and I live in a rural area where I can hike a circuit that gives me 750ft elevation gain and loss in 4.5-5.0 miles. 4 days a week I hike that. The 3 days I'm in the office I hit the city walking trail next to my office for an hour. Usually cover 3.5 miles a day. Generally I walk or hike 30 miles a week.

I went from 240 down to 215lbs by May 15th. I set a goal that once I was below 215lbs I would begin to work with weights again. Now I'm hitting my dumb bells 3x per week and doing calisthenics every day (push ups, crunches, squats, jumping jacks- basically the same stuff I did when I was in the Army, lol). I've lost an additional 5lbs down to 210 and now regaining some muscle. I expect weight loss to come off a little slower now. When I hike at home I now carry a pack with the weight I've lost (currently 30 lbs). Each time I lose 5lbs I'll add it to the pack..

So I'm about 1/2 way to my goal of 180-185lbs. I'm hoping to reach it before the New Year, and definitely by my 50th birthday in May. In fact- I think I'm setting a goal to run a Spartan Race next summer.

    I'll give it a shot.

    I'm a 37 year old
    5'6"
    And currently 195

The heaviest I've ever been is 202.

The lightest adult weight is probably 170ish. I was at about 175 before I got married in 2005.

About 6 years ago I went on a diet with my father and it was pretty successful. I watched my calorie intake and restricted myself to around 2000 calories or less. Within 3 months I dropped 15 lbs.

I slowly gained the weight back and have been hovering around 190-195 ever since.

Would love to get down to 180 or less.

Too few calories especially if you're lifting again. Bump that up. I'm currently training from a spartan after 170# loss

Even at net? If I work out and hike, I may consume 2,000+ calories, but the net is no more than 1,500 p/day. (Calories in - Calories expended = no more than 1,500 p/day).

I read it as you're only eating 1500. If you're eating 2500 and burning 1000 over your daily expenditure then that's fine. I don't eat back my excessive calories currently until the last 8 are gone. Then I will just maintain and eat back what I burn and my normal allowance.

I'm calculating that 1,500 cal p/day should enable me to lose 1.5-2lbs p/wk (static). On days where I just hike or walk I may only eat a total of about 1,500 calories, but on days I know I'm working with weights I fuel up.

I've been on that 'no more than net 1,500cals' for about 4 months and it seems to work. Weight loss is slowing but I'm now working muscle too. But I'm no expert. If there is a better way I'm all ears (or love handles :) )

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
I have tried every way. I am going back to the med-low simple carb route. But, with my dad and grandparents being diabetic, and me having a good chance of developing it, I am cutting out simple carbs. No rice, no potatoes, no candy... no white breads. I have done it before, and I will do it again. I need to.

Here's what I'm gonna say to everyone in this thread. Awesome job on all of you for taking this step. It's an amazing journey if you've never done it. I am so greatful for having the abilities I have had and continue to form and wish you all the same. This isn't easy but nothing worth having is. there's gonna be times when you screw up and it's fine just pick right back up where you left off. my biggest fear when I started was all it was only going to take one chicken wing and I was gonna nutty professor back into my size 50 pants and 5xl shirt. You're human and no one here expects you to be perfect. I still have bad days. If any of you need or want to talk along the way hit me up

Let me preface this by saying I'm not a dietician or anything, just somebody who looks way too deep into stuff.

    First, calculate your BMR.

    http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bmr_calculator.htm
There are other BMR calculators, but I like that this doesn't include activity level and just gives you a baseline number. Using the same info among multiple websites, the calories for me vary 10%....not sure which is more accurate.

Your BMR is basically what you burn from just being alive. 1lb is 3500 calories. So if you want to lose 2lb a week, you need a 7000 calorie deficit.

If your BMR is 2000 calories a day, per week that's 14,000 calories burned staying alive. Theoretically if you were to consume 1000 calories a day, you would lose 2lb a week without having to workout. But the body doesn't work that way and it'll go into "shock" and slow down.

If your BMR + "workout calories" - Calories in = 1000 you should be pretty good with your 2lb a week goal.

In for support and participation. I have always lifted weights and played sports but I was looking to shed the "lineman" physique. I totally transformed my diet and am down almost 30 pounds this year (I was down over 30 but have put 9 pounds back on). Diet/Nutrition is HUGE.

    29 years old
    5'11
    Currently 239
    Heaviest 268
Goal 215 (was 235, but I am going to keep pushing).

Both @Newlife and I are relatively active in the gym and fitness thread. We can be a little bro-bra-ish over there but there are a lot of really knowledgeable people in there that have helped me a lot along the way. It's a great resource.

Looking forward to seeing the progress in here, it will serve as great motivation, and hopefully I will have some progress of my own to share.
