This wasn't advertised by Toyota and even the dealerships. The 2021 Tacoma's (at least the ones with remote connect) have a remote start built into the key fob. You could of course activate it on the App as well but that is a trial and isn't worth the $80 yearly. This was a pleasant surprise when I found out.

To activate, click the lock button three times on the FOB and hold it for a few seconds on the third time. The hazards should go off multiple times if you have done it right. If anyone wants to test their model to see if it works, including what options you have, feel free to reply.

And, when the Remote Connect trial runs out, I'm pretty sure the fob stops working for remote start at the same time...

I got an SR that didn't even come with a remote of any kind. Went and got a viper keyless alarm installed with remote start... that stays on after I open the door.

Ah the perks of having an old fashioned key.

even an old fashion key on a 2016 4Runner would shut off when door was opened. Such a stupid design.

My bad, I didn't know. I got excited and I couldn't find any posts about it anywhere. Maybe it's my terrible use of the search function?

Yes, it is kinda sorta old news. I do find it curious that Toyota doesn't mention it in the manual.

Confirmed that the clicker remote trick works on mine.

I don't believe it does this on the Tacoma. Definitely a stupid design. But not as stupid as overlooking the ability to start the truck, but not be able to lock it with the buttons or fob, and then have it driven away.

So does this mean the remote start works without the subscription for remote connect? Or do you need to have the subscription in order to use remote start from key fob?

That seems to be the great debate. Does the remote Start still work on a 2021 if you decide not to keep the remote services after the subscription runs out.

Nice! Yea dealer did not know my truck had a built in remote start mechanism??? He said had to buy one from them or use remote connect app.

So from what your saying the app is not needed to have remote start due to the fobs activating the remote starter built into these model trucks from factory.

@MaverickT883 Do you work at a dealer?

I didn’t get any remote subscription, it wasn’t even offered or discussed with me and it works for me. Hope that means it will indefinitely.
