Mods: Is this still a Tacoma?
I was waiting for you to say that...and that's what you think is going to happen, but after hearing this argument so many times, we decided a while back to do our own research and debunk this myth. Let me elaborate...

Your starter will outlast you, your vehicle's engine and 4-10 generations after you. I don’t know if people realize the number of cycles it’s life can handle. In the 90’s it was around 50,000 cycles. Today, especially because of auto start/stop technology on some vehicles having raised the bar on robustness, you’re talking 500,000 to 1.2 million cycles! You do the math of how much, on average, you start your vehicle per day. At 3 times per day, that’s 167,000 days to 400,000 days, or 457 years to 1096 years (the year 2476 to the year 3115)! Your engine would’ve been replaced quite a few times already if there is even any metal left on the body/frame, and we’ll be able to remote start vehicles by just thinking it by then, if we're still using automobiles by then!

And say down the road the starter did need to be replaced, what are we talking in terms of added comfort over the years? $150-$200?

So let me ask you THIS, with all that aside, you still have to come into your vehicle and start it right? And without the remote starter, you're not coming to a vehicle that has given you the mentioned amenities when you do start it.

As far as citation, this is based on looking up starter brands that are used by OEMs, then looking at the number of expected cycles. Look at both vehicles WITH auto start/stop and not. OEMs don't put different ones if a make/model is the same, but one has auto start/stop and the other does not. I'm in the automotive industry as well as automotive manufacturing as I design and program assembly lines and robotics for manufacturing plants and have been handed many products to sample robotic lift load, such as frames/chassis, automotive fasteners, airbags, any part on a vehicle assembly (aside from assembled engine, however engine components yes) and many starters as well. I don't want you to take my word for it, I want you to dig into it because even if I cite one thing, that's one of many, we can all google, so I don't want to appear biased. I have not "documented" it. It was merely research, looking at a spec sheets, and calculating expected life based on rated cycles on those spec sheets. Anyone can do that. You know now where I lean so even if I cite something, would you then believe me? Because I can, but then the rebuttal back can't be that the source is someone else's opinion. Spec sheets are the straight source to debunking, they don't post those in the write-ups I've seen.

Research MTBF of modern day starters and you'll see what I mean.

Never thought about the start/stop feature in some vehicles. Way more cycles on those. You definitely did your research and debunked my excessive wear on the starter problem. I’ve been through multiple winters now with the truck without it. I’ll think about it on the next vehicle.

I called and cancelled my free trial of connected services after about a month of ownership due to privacy concerns. I can confirm my remote start with keyfob no longer works.

Also, I found this on toyota's website back when I was researching all the connected services crap. Hope it helps.

This is not working for me... So I guess I don't have "Remote Connect" with my 2021... In the app under subscriptions I have "Safety Connect" and "Wifi Connect", not remote connect.

Does this require a push button start tacoma? My SR5 only has the key start, is that my issue??

Yes, only the push button starts get this I believe. The manual transmission's don't get it either.

They don't charge you. Your trial period ends after one year unless you have audio plus or audio premium package.

Same here I did not pay to any subscription at all but my taco came with remote start in the premium package so I guess it is there forever without any subscription of any kind I hope.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.

I believe the remote is in Push-Start levels such as OR or Sport and up.

Yeah. Some Vipers w/rs can start manuals. You have to enable it on the brain module and follow a shutdown sequence.

I have a 2014 and installed my viper with rs. Still works to this day. Added benefit is being able to roll down all 4 windows even with the alarm on. I can remote start in that state and if the alarm is triggered like someone put their hand in to unlock the door, the windows automatically roll up, doors lock, and the engine disables. I can even just crack the windows or roll down increments. And of course, doesn't shut off when I open my door. Lol.
