I know, old post. The tech that did mine a couple years back said the book told him to take damn near the top half of the engine off. He told me he undid the motor mounts and "tilted" it a bit to gain a little more room and he didn't take anything off the engine. He said it was a bitch and total time in/out was in the neighborhood of 10hrs? Nothing looked tampered with when I checked so I assume he told me the truth. It was all covered by warranty and cost me exactly $0.00. They also discovered that my radiator was leaking and replaced that too.

Is this showing that the crossover pipe is at fault? Just took my 2017 in for this and they want to tear the engine apart to get to this. If it is the crossover pipe on mine it won't be covered under warranty, even though I only have 41,000 miles on it.
    Thanks

should be covered under the powertrain warranty 60k. I had my repair declined at first by the service writer, had them go ask their technician what is classified as the powertrain, after that they apologized and said it was covered. Be nice!

Just picked up my truck, not going to be covered under power train warranty if it is the crossover pipe or the seals between that and the engine. I did get a quote to replace these items (crossover pipe and seals) for $1107.17. They did state that later if there is a recall on this I could submit a form to get my money back. I didn't have the work done, just picked the truck up. Both Toyota Corporate and the dealer were set on this decision no matter how nice I was.
My advise to all the Tacoma owners is take a look at this or have your dealer look BEFORE your 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty is up. A quick look from under the passenger side should do it to see if its leaking. They did state that if I was within that time it would have been covered. This is my 4th tacoma, first 3rd gen and have never had anything like this happen before. Time to start saving.....

Did you or anyone actually have this fixed after the 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty ran out? I know you said it was covered, but how far were you into your warranties?

    Thanks

Please advise exactly where to look. I’m have been smelling coolant and my 3 years is this February. Pics would help if it’s not too much trouble.

I would crawl under the truck and look up at the back side of the engine. The dealer found mine because it had been dripping onto my skid plates.

Yes, again it was fixed under the powertrain warranty. I was at 52,000 miles on a 2016. It was done March of 2020

Don’t crawl under it, this thread shows where to look and it’s on the top backside of the engine

Lots of pictures in this thread start from the beginning. It’s on the top back side of the engine where the bypass pipe is located.

    Thanks for the info TW!

I’ve had 2 instances of empty tanks this year, happen to have a scope and going to look soon! No smells, but told them I’ve never known a new vehicle to need bi-annual coolant refills, sealed system word circle and asked how they’d feel to carry around a jug of coolant in 4 y/o vehicle just in case...

lol - none of the shitboxes ive ever owned lost coolant... unless they were disabled lol

    anyways - big thanks everyone!!
I’ve got the 75k platinum Toyota warranty so I’ll post findings if I tangle with them again.

The scopes that plug into your phone work well. So if you're suspicious or wanna keep an eye on things, they're cheap enough on Amazon.

I purchased a steno scope and got these photos today from the top passenger side. If you can crawl back there on the passenger side high enough you can just see where it is without a camera. Crawling under the passenger side and looking up behind the engine with a flashlight you can see it very well. Here are the photos from the steno scope and one from underneath. I was able to reach the leak with my hand and remove some of the leak on the second photo.

Sorry to see that Toyota has not resolved this issue. A Tech found this problem on my 2016 (purchased in Sept 2015) in early 2016 when checking my transmission fluid level. He told me at the time that Toyota hates them because they are a high volume dealer and often discover problems with the new models.
