Uppers press in. Lowers have 4 bolts each. There are many threads debating the ball joint quality. It's my understanding that the ball joints are the same if lifted or not.

Its been upper ball joints. The last incident blew up the lower as well, But I think it was the upper failing. The upper is sheared off. I can post pics. I'm really new to this forum and forums in general.

Yea let's see some pictures. Do you have stock upper control arms with 3" of lift?

Welcome to TW Nick. I'm pretty new here too but recently did a bunch of research before replacing my lowers. That's seems strange to me about the uppers giving problems..... twice. Someone will surely provide some insight.

Its been uppers and twice. The first failure and rebuild led me to buy the Moog's and take the torque spec seriously. I just don't have a clue whats going on all of the sudden. Speculation from a guy who works in packaging is that it has to be something to do with redoing the shocks and coil springs. I just cannot see how that would be snapping the ball joints though. Its very expensive each time it happens and I have been lucky that no other vehicles have been involved and I have been uninjured. I think I'll reach out the lift kit company. I'm going to attempt to load some pics up soon.

Yep, I can see the pics from the links. The pics will show up in this thread if you select the "share" link on each photo on the photobucket site. When you select the link it automatically copies it, then all you have to do is paste it here on the thread.

Thanks. Still not sure if I'm getting it rite. There is a shop in town that installs lifts and I think I'll give them a call and see if they will give an opinion. I dont think I'll see this kind of "Luck" 3 times.

That is a huge ass spacer on top of the coilover. And the spindle doesn't look OEM. Is that a drop bracket lift?

Has to be a DB with that big of a spacer. i think we found your problem.

Also you don't have to use Photobucket, if you're on your phone just click "upload a file" and then add the pic that way.

Just recently had the same issue on my 2001 PreRunner, on my front passenger wheel. Have owned the vehicle the past 5 years and it has 178,000 miles on it. Will be replacing the other side soon. But, should I replace only the lower ball joint on the other side since it did not fail. Or should I go ahead and replace the lower control arm as well?

Should be a sticky that rotates to the top every week or other week. Seriously though Dirty Pool, and his knowledge and experience, is such a valuable asset in this community. The degree of technical knowledge and skill he has is at the top and what's cool is he shares ALL of it. I've been on different forums for over 15 years and it's rare to have that kind of expertise that is so willingly shared. I love reading his posts. Learn tons.

unfortunately my OEM one failed spec after 3 years and 30k miles of road driving :(

replaced with Moog 555 to pass inspection and going to see how long this lasts, if I get the same amount of time at least it was less expensive

something tells me the 1st Gen OEM BJ are now shelf units and not being produced anymore

Failed spec?? Do they check BJ wear as part of a road inspection in PA?? Damn.

FWIW, I had moogs for 6+ years. I only really replaced them because I was upgrading my coilovers/UCAs and had everything apart anyway so I got some 555's form Low Range. They were still in good condition when they came off. I should have kept them as emergency spares, but I'm stupid and threw them away.

I plan to replace them every few years or ~5-10k miles anyway, which is way shorter than the lower quality moogs lasted. I would do this if they were moog, 555, or OEM.
