Anyone else have this problem? I just noticed it today, I will be calling dealership in a few minutes to get it taken care of while under 36k miles. Currently at 35k, pretty upset that a $30k + truck has problems like this.

Just got off phone with dealership. Of course the first thing out of there mouth was there any damage to it. I said no, the truck has 35k miles on it and the finish behind the gas tank cover is rubbing off from the lid being opened and shut. He said that might be something a body shop will have to look at...... I said, its a flawed design and he agreed that it should not be doing this. He asked for me to bring the truck by tom night so he can take pictures and send to the district rep. Sorry if i sound a little heated, just upset that we dish so much money out on these trucks and the fit and finish is lacking. Other than that I love my taco.

Update: photos have been sent to the local rep. If you look closely and compare it to another Tacoma it looks like my door is knuckled out on the inside end (where it makes contact) None the less there is no damage to the door at all. Has not been hit or tampered with in any shape or form. They even agreed that it would be really hard to bend it without taking the lid off and then torquing on it. Waiting patiently to see what I get in response. All i want is some touch up paint, and the door to be correct without coming in contact with the body.

Mine is doing the same at 59k miles. When the gas door became rusty, it began to bind and come in contact with the paint. I have terrible scrapes back there now. I have to WD40 the rust out, and relube it with grease to keep it from binding now, every month or so. Definitely a design flaw.

I'm not really sure what I'm looking at in those pics. Can you back the camera out a bit please?

65k 2012 doing the same thing. I did have an accident where someone pulled out in front of me, did over 8k in damages to the truck. (Mostly driverside front) wasn't sure if it was affected in the accident or Toyota flaw. But guess since yours is doing it too. I'll probably just remove the door one day.

That's what i was thinking, but all the black is just the decal on the side of his truck. I thought his paint was all messed up.
Top picture, middle of it, there's a rub mark that he's referring to.

for the love of god and all that is holy, there is no defect (maybe a poor design, but not a defective one)

lube the hinge once in a while and this will not occur

how often do you lube the gas door pivot in those 36k miles ?

mine, was getting sort of sticky at 9000 miles so I boeshield it and it's
been fine for 20,000 miles. if not lubed and it sticks it take very little
door opening force to bend the attachment and cause paint rub

I have the same thing going on with my 2012. I put a little layer of white grease on the area and don't even worry about it. It is a truck, and it doesn't affect how it looks, runs or anything. I have better things to worry about.

I have the same problem on my 2010. It hasn't been hit and the metal is straight. I don't recall when it started - probably sometime after 50,000 miles.

I guess the hinge has bent, which I assume is the attachment that you referred to.

The metal on mine was not bent, but when trying to open the door it would bind due to rust, and actually bend the entire panel that is riveted to the fender. It is not magical, it is bullshit. Please refer me to another vehicle in which you have to lube the fuel door so that it doesn't rust shut.

Here are some more pictures as promised. I understand that it is a truck, but I'm under 36k miles with no accidents. My gas tank cover lid should not be contacting the body behind it.
