I'm not sure why this topic picked up so much hate. Is my thinking wrong that when I invest over $30k in a product, it should not have problems so early in its lifespan?

    They're all like that.

Dude I am 100% with you on that. There is no excuse to have something like a fuel door fail like that. There are countless members on this forum who have the exact same problem. Short of Toyota doing an extended warranty TSB (like they did with the headlights, which is unlikely as the fuel door isn't really a safety thing) all we can do as owners is keep it cleaned and lubed, and hope they changed it for 2016.

o no doubt! I just thought I would throw my problem up there with pictures to help others. My goal was to have others take a quick look at their gas tank lids in case they do have a similar problem. I'm glad I caught it before rust begins to form. O well, I will let you know what the district rep says. I will mention that others are having similar problems and see if it can be forwarded to corporate for review. I won't get my hopes up, but maybe just maybe they do a silent or small recall (change for 2016s). No reason for newer trucks to have these types of problems when they are not neglected.

My 2010 did the same. Just tool a piece of wood(broom handle), wrapped a towel on the end to "protect" and then punch the back where the lid touch and scratch. Problem solved.

My 08 does this too. It's a rust issue on mine. I can't really tell why it's doing it by looking at the hinges, but it's so bad that I only open the filler door half way to fill up with fuel.

Just filled up my 2013. Same thing, made a loud creak when I opened it and it is contacting the body behind. Guess I need to lube it up. I will only open it enough to fuel up from now on.

The maintenance you do every 6 month / 5k is called "lube, oil, and filter". My dealer sprays lithium grease on the gas door hinges at each oil change:

If you would have read my above comments you would of seen that I already said I lube my gas door hinge. Before owning this vehicle I have never lubed a gas door hinge. By time I figured out "oh look, I have to lube my gas door hinge on my $30k truck" it was too late, and had rusted warping the hinge, and causing the exact same issue the OP is having.

^Not sure what you expect from a metal-on-metal joint. My previous vehicle had a plastic gas door. Maybe that's how Toyota will design out the problem for the next gen...

Wow,so much ado over a fuel door. Anyway, check your side to side gaps with the fuel door closed. I'm guessing the gap will be smaller on the left side. If so,open the door and give it a little tug until the gaps are equal.Should solve your "problem".

If Toyota wants to pick up the tab to provide me with this solution, I will gladly accept! That is one awesome truck!

They will if you figure out how to get into their race program. Know anyone who knows Ivan Stewart? :D

Update: Rep claimed that it wasn't under warranty so they would not replace the gas door. However the dealer argued that there was no neglect on my part and it was a problem that should not be happening at 35k miles. The service guy i was working with said give me a second, he then proceeded to call over to the body shop next door that handles all the work for the dealer. They sent it over, took about an hour and got it back with no rub. Body shop called over and said, "no dmg to bracket or gas tank cover" they bent the tongue in a little. Best part of all it it was on them! Satisfied with local dealer now

I've said this another thread about the same thing. The fuel door is very cheaply made. I've had many vehciles with some with over 200 and 300 thousand. Never had a fuel door bind or made a terrible as the Tacoma.

Mine is rusty and bent on the hinge. When j falls off I'll put another one on. I bought my truck used and it was this way when I bought it.

Suggesting this is the owners fault is bull shit. As an above poster has suggested.
