You can see the bed shake on just about any truck.

Interesting, I'll have to check this out later on mine.

As for the bed twisting and shaking... that's because the frame is a C type frame, not a fully boxed frame. If it was boxed, there would be very minimal, almost un-noticable flex. With the C channel, the back is fully open and not boxed up. It's really noticable if you go to intentinally flex it, you can see how much of a twist there is. It's normal, and part of the design (like it or not, it's what it is).

I am a bit curious though if the extra support to the frame from the factory hitch might play in helping to prevent this. To the people getting the crack, do you have the factory hitch?

Factory hitch. Tiny crack right side, nothing on left side.

maybe not on those with unibody trucks like chevy avalanche, which is basically a chevy suburban suv with the back roof cut off.

Just checked mine. So serious signs of damage or wear. The only thing I saw was very very slight cracking/chipping of the paint in those areas when I looked hard enough.

I do a bit of moving and hauling which requires me to drive with the tailgate down. Once I had a full sized quad in the back while leaving the desert and kinda caught air, slamming the back on the quad down when we landed. My tailgate has never closed quite right since then. And of course I have done plenty of off roading. Jumping, whoops, and stuff I don't even like to think about. I don't know if it's caused by anything like that or I would have them.

knock on wood, but although the gap has widened on the drivers side there are no signs of damage on my 05. my grandfather used to drive the truck regularly loaded with firewood on a fire road that gives jeeps trouble, have to love tacomas.

2010 has a larger relief radius i'm assuming because of the issue with the cracks. Not sure what years this got implimented.

I wouldnt go so far as to say it is shoddy quality. The truck as a whole is amazing...excellent build quality in my opinion. Coming from the engineering world...i know that it does take a lot of design to make these vehicles what they are. There are times that you just cannot anticipate (by analysis) certain problems. I'd concentrate on the fact that they went ahead and fixed the problem. And are constantly being made aware of issues and correcting them. I stand behind my Tacoma and Toyota as a whole because they seem to be very responsible and are always looking at ways to improve their products.
