Don't get me wrong , i love my Tacoma too, but the shoddy was reffering to the cracking itself , not the truck as a whole.

I have a 08 DC with the larger relief cutout, right side is cracked, left side is not. I have a camper shell on mine how many others with cracks have one installed.

    Fortech,

My uprights as you call them are not aluminum on my '09, they are steel. I took a magnet and the magnet sticks to the uprights. If it were aluminum, a magnet would not stick.

Are you sure yours are aluminum?

No I'm not sure - I just heard others refer to them as aluminum. I didn't try to stick a magnet to them as it didn't really matter, unless I were to weld on them. Regardless of metal type they are still cracked.

    Just checked mine and nothing.

I usually have about 8 100LB chlorine pails in the back that go from side to side hitting each side and pissing me off... that should create enough stress for that part to break I think, but it hasnt... yet.

Okay. Yes I agree with you that it is unfortunate that the cracks are there. It seems that with Timbers post that it does happen to the later model Tacoma's as well. And I don't think it matters whether its cold or warm climate (Arctic conditions excluded).

The fact that they are steel is actually good, and as you mentioned we can weld on them, and that is why I brought it up.

Thank you for the thread. It is good to be informed.

I am beginning to think it does not matter, provided that we are aware of the issue and monitor the condition if it occurs.

We could weld reinforcement brackets if there was a rupture, but I can't imagine that happening unless there was a collision.

    Answer your question?

Checked mine out today, no cracks.

Granted, mine's very new...just over 5k miles, bed has been used to haul a few loads of mulch, a few loads of soil, furniture, and other misc. smaller stuff.

However, I did max payload on the mulch and soil trips. FWIW, the TSB springs performed beautifully.
