Maybe something with the hardness of the U-bolts, nuts, or springs changed that impacts the clamping forces needed? It was originally 37 for Gen 2, then 44 with the Latest Gen 2 springs, then 52 on Gen 3.

On that note, who's to say the 90+ was right to begin with?

That would just indicate that an increase in clamping force is required to keep the clamped surfaces from peeling away from each other under all load conditions. That is my best guess :notsure:

Soooo , they went to softter steel??
 Toyotas been all over the map with this issue...

That number is pretty much right and in step with most truck manu. Specs. I've lifted roughly 200 Tacomas in the socal region mostly 2nd gens & almost always disturbed by spinning Ubolt nuts off by hand , if you guys are ok with toyotas wishy-washy spec have at it.

FWIW, Rear suspension is pretty much my specialty, why?? Because of toyotas spring TSB year after year

I remember the first gen colorado's having 56 in the oem spec, and frontiers were in the 50s somewhere also.

For the record, I'm not saying you're wrong, in fact I don't have enough knowledge to say anyone is wrong. Just voicing my observations.

    Great advice in this thread!

Just got mine on Thursday: Build date APR 2016 at the Texas plant. IDK if they're watching online feedback, or if customer reports are finally getting back to them, but I torqued mine to 52 lb-ft. Of the 8 bolts, 6 were fully torqued, 1 needed a quarter turn, one needed slightly under a half turn. Updating in the U-joint forum too, looks like that problem may have been similarly addressed.

Still - for everyone reading getting a new vehicle soon - check your U-bolts! Check them every time you're under your vehicle, it's an easy and fast check (<5 min) and can extend the life of your leaf springs.

Hey @splitbolt , would you be willing to update the OP with the correct info for new folks coming into the thread? Every time I check mine I have to fish around for the correct torque.

    52 lb-ft, 19mm nuts

    Take care,
    B.

Well I was totally (not) shocked to hear a nasty creaking sound from the rear of my truck today. With 2800 miles I believe the loosy goosy u-bolts have finally arrived. I was hoping I was one of the lucky ones. Guess I will grab the torque wrench and grease gun and check my u-joints too. That thing sounds like a 1970's Ford with shot control arm bushings. I think I will measure the current torque on all 8 before I tighten them to 52.

Well I got another surprise. When I stepped up on the nerf bar I heard the squeaking, It is coming from the front of my truck. It is somewhere around the passenger control arm or spring. WTF. Is there a thread for this one.

February built Texas truck, checked mine (u-bolts), torque is forsure 52 ft-lbs. Didn't exceed it to see how much required to actually turn nut.

My skid plate though was a different story as you can see. (And what I'm not posting is the fact one bolt is missing)
Serves me right for over paying on the undercoat from the dealership...

Day two of ownership, going to be a fun day Tuesday when I go to pick up my rubber bed mat!

Try again after about 500 miles; gives the springs a chance to settle in.

Over torquing bolts under this kind of stress, will cause hem to simply pop off. The proper way to torque them is to tighten them until they break then back them off a half a turn

For me, 6 out of 8 were at correct torque. 2 were under, but barely.

    April 2016 build date. Mexico

Same here . . . 2 slightly under but the other 6 were fine. Mine was built in Texas.
