How quickly people forget. Everyone said the EXACT same thing when the first Colorado came out to replace the S10 "the S10 is getting its ass kicked by the Tacoma but now this new Colorado will compete! Just look at a 2004 (in 2006) and see its keeping up!".... now go look at a 2004 Colorado vs a 2004 Tacoma today and tell me which one is worth more....

Its likely this new Colorado will be the same story as the old one. Keeps value for a few years because all trucks pretty much do but as soon as you get to the 80-100k mile range the value will plummet while the Tacoma will hold relatively strong. Happens every.... single... time.

This is total bs, I test drove a trd sport Tacoma, and the interior quality (seats mainly) was sub par for the 42k price. Take the blinders off and realize that Toyota isn't better than the domestics these days.

If I took your approach (and thousands of others) I wouldn't own another Toyota product with the experiences I've had with my toyota's.

By your logic, do you honestly think this trend will stick around forever? So you're saying nothing will ever change in the auto industry despite the big 3 coming out with trucks that are 10x better than any of crap they were pumping out prerecession. I'm not trying to paint myself as a GM fanboy (currently on toyota #3 in the last 12 years), but to sit here and say shit will never change and toyota will always be #1 is silly.

The ones that missed the frame spray and now have rotten frames held their value great! Insert sarcasm smiley here

So we should just ignore history?? People think making a quality truck that last long term is just something any car company can just "decide" to do, you seem to think after the bailout GM just flipped a switch and bam that's that. I'm more skeptical.

Part of the reason Toyota can AFFORD to make a better product is they have a more efficient supply chain, Toyota literally INVENTED the modern automotive supply chain model in the 80s and they've been outspending GM in R&D every year since.... getting that much of a head start on logistics and spending BILLIONS more every year on R&D nets RESULTS.

If you have a more efficient supply chain you save $ which means it costs you LESS to build the same product. Toyota then has an option, they can run at a higher profit margin or they can run at the SAME profit margin while allowing themselves to spend more $ on quality.

Given that logic, combined with historical data and common sense and YES odds are the Tacoma is going to be far more reliable long term than the GM, just like the Camry is vs the Malibu and the last Tacoma was vs the last Colorado and the Prius vs anything hybrid by GM.

You can cross your fingers and HOPE GM somehow turned everything they did wrong around, but the odds are definitely stacked against you on that one.

Summary of our cars... Seems self explanatory

Family owned GM's over the yrs:
    2000 Camaro Z28 - ~16k mi on it now
2000 Silverado Z71 - sold 2014, 100k mi, maintained flawlessly, body and brake lines rusted against best efforts
2001 S-10 ZR2 - sold 2008, nickled/dimed: window reg., hubs, HVAC controls, handles, misc motor bits
    2002 Camaro Z28 - ~9k on it now
    2003 Silverado SS AWD - sold in 2008 for Z06, 600+awhp
2003 Grand Am SE - sold 2013, nickled/dimed: head gasket when new, window reg., HVAC controls, handles,
    2008 Corvette Z06 - 592 rwhp
2009 Malibu LTZ - sold 2011 for Tahoe, in shop for warranty work up to and through 45k mi
2010 Malibu LTZ - sold in 2012 for Passat, in shop for warranty up to and through 30k mi
2010 Silverado Z71 - sold 2013 for gas saver, rattled like 2001 ZR2, trans. searched for gears
2011 Tahoe LTZ - frame and undercarriage are rusted like crazy, my brother cleans it top to bottom weekly
2014 Silverado - has less than 12k mi on it... interior is hard/coarse plastic as was his 2000 Silverado, rusted frame sections/rear-end, disappointing for something pampered but it's a lease for $200/month for a 4 door 4x4 (hence why Chevy's resale values are joke worthy)

Jap/Euro cars - just standard maintenance:
    2004 Jetta - no issues/complaints
    2006 Acura TSX - no issues/complaints
    2008 Civic Si - no issues/complaints
    2008 Acura TL - no issues/complaints
    2009 Honda CR-V - no issues/complaints
    2012 Passat - no issues/complaints
    2012 Jetta - no issues/complaints
    2014 Tacoma - no issues/complaints
    2015 Acura TLX - no issues/complaints
    2015 Passat - no issues/complaints
    2015 Jetta - no issues/complaints

Never heard of anyone getting screwed by this... just people getting BRAND NEW frames on 10 year old trucks for free. Sounds fine to me :)

My roommate's 2006 Colorado is literally falling apart.... don't see chevy doing jack shit for him, his truck is worth about $5k and has 100k miles. Meanwhile I literally just sold my 2005 Tacoma with 120k miles for $17k! You can check my post history I sold it right here on TW...

I wish I had the cash and need for either vehicle. Need being the most important factor. I can't justify the purchase of a TRD Pro or ZR-2 although it would be nice to have a factory built mid size off road beast rather than say a full size Raptor. I am happy with with my truck and all the after market off-road goodies available.

You make some valid points but I'm not sure that it is the exact situation. I had a previous-gen Colorado Z71 as my last truck. It was a cool truck but I ended up having some quality issues. I think the Colorado had potential back in 04 but GM dug their own grave with the head issues that smacked the 04-06 trucks. Then to make matters worse, they re-did the 07 engine and supposedly resolved the issues. Well, unfortunately the issues started popping up on higher-mileage vehicles. I am 1 of those people that got hit with it. I had the newer motor (3.7) and my head went. That is when I got rid of the truck. Best thing is, 6months prior I put a brand new factory transmission in it, with hopes to keep it for another 5 years. The truck was mint otherwise. But the head went and that was it for me. Those trucks have their quirks, for sure but they could've been a good truck.

Now these new ones might be a lot better than you are giving them credit for. If GM learned from their mistakes, there is no reason that truck can't be a solid buy. It probably won't hold it's value like the Taco though, just because it still has a lot to prove. If anyone has driven the new Colorado V6 back to back with the new Taco V6, I feel like the Colorado powertrain feels better. I still just wanted a Toyota and that is what I bought. But time will tell if the new Colorados are legit but it's been 2 years and so far so good, I'd say. And the ZR2 is just 1 more reason to at least give them a look. If they fail, then so be it. If not, then you have to give credit where it is due.

Giving credit where credit is due is very very hard for some people to do.

Anyways, in 3 years when the 4Runner is paid for, I will be taking a serious look at this zr2, but a trd pro here is $53k (expensive!!) so time will tell what the Chevy will MSRP for.

Screwed you SO BAD that you immediately bought a 2nd gen and got a free frame replacement and a bunch of other free shit on that one??

suuuurrrreeeee you got screwed. When people get "screwed" they don't immediately run back and buy the exact same product lol. You knew exactly what you were doing, taking advantage of Toyota getting you a bunch of free stuff on a decade old truck you just bought secondhand (which I would too).... but then go complain about how Toyota is "screwing" you, its like a bro version of the "let me talk to you manager!" haircut lol.

Giving credit where its do?? You're sitting in another thread 2 weeks ago being a super mooch trying to penny pinch Toyota out of every possible penny on a truck that you bought second-hand knowing the problems it had....Toyota is giving you like $10k of free shit on a truck you probably didn't even spend $8k on, now say Toyota is screwing you... THEN say "giving credit where it is due is very very hard for some people" LOL, oh god the irony is killing me

Your situation is like mine but I had an 05. That truck ran good until the warranty ran out. Once the warranty expired all kinds of problems popped up. I really thought that truck would last but it didn't. Got that check engine light to disappear long enough to trade it in for my wife's Subaru. When it was time for my new vehicle I test drove a Colorado and chose a Tacoma. The price between the Colorado and Tacoma was similar so I chose the Tacoma. As long as there are other options I will choose them over GM.

The screwing I received from Toyota had to be offset by, as you put it, taking advantage of Toyota (seriously?? ) to recoupe some of my lost money. If anything Toyota has been taking advantage of their customers for years, they usually don't settle a 3.4 billion (yes with a B) lawsuit if they weren't "screwing" anyone.

If Toyota didn't offer a solution for THEIR MISTAKE I'd never buy another Tacoma. That's just asking for it. But they are making it better by fixing the '05 I just bought, out of the goodness of their heart. (Rolls eyes)

Giving Toyota credit for fixing an issue that they have known about for years isn't really deserved IMO. And people that otherwise would have been screwed out of a frame replacement, now are getting a second chance of life out of their Tacoma's because people started a class action lawsuit against Toyota.
So ya you're right, Toyota definitely deserves credit for that.
