BUT you can't get the Tacoma in diesel which is a big deal with the hard core offroaders I'd think

ZR2 wins stock vs. stock imo, but if you want to modify the truck then it can't compete with everything available aftermarket for the Tacoma.

I know that the tale of the tape shows these two trucks to be similar in size, but the pics make the ZR2 look like a fullsize in comparison

Have you ever wheeled a diesel? In theory it's great, but coming from the jeep world the idea is better then the reality.
So much added weigh up front, unbalances the rig.
I'll take a gasser off-road any day of the week vs a diesel
    Rock crawling or high speed

Diesel is great for overlanding, mainly for the extra range out of a single tank. Diesel availability can be a drawback. For "wheeling" (as in sending your truck through rough terrain to see it it will make it) gas wins most every time.

I like the idea of a diesel overlanding rig, but fuel availability can be a problem in some parts of BC, as can cold weather starts for diesel rigs (though you would never know it right now with half the forests :bananadead:). I was thankful for having a gas truck during this summers expedition, as diesel was not available at some spots I needed to fill up.

Is it just me or do the lines of the ZR2 make it look like an old lady that got a botched facelift and now her eyebrows, cheeks and jawline look like someone scooped them up and pinned them behind the top of her ears?

I'd rather offroad with automatic personally. Just one less thing to worry about if you're out scouting for game or road hunting.

Here's an article that explains how the work, pretty slick technology mainly used in high end racing applications.

Basically they can self adjust to provide a good ride either on highway or during extreme service. Also by design the shock is far less affected by fluid viscosity, meaning under prolonged hard use as the shock oil heats up the shock will still function as intended & performance will not degrade like it does with even a high-end conventional shock (King, Fox, Bilstein etc). And best of all, they're Engineered in Canada! lol

Not quite sure where you came up with the $6k price difference, loaded up ZR2 vs bare bones Pro maybe?

The ZR2 gasser is on par price wise with the Pro. The way Toyota offers & prices their trucks there's not much picking & choosing of options, more just take what they're offering & be happy. Meanwhile you have a lot more options configuring a ZR2. Even if you could add tires, a locker & complete suspension for $6k, your still short the diesel part of the equation.

The Taco definitely has the ZR2 covered in the aftermarket, but all that's coming fast for the Twins, multiple options for superchargers, bumpers, rims, lifts, suspensions, long travel kits with wider fenders, lowering kits, tunes, led taillights, Anzo headlights, soft tops etc. There's even been guys dropping LS v8's in them.

So it's been about a month with the ZR2 and a few wheeling weekends so far and I'm seriously impressed with it! The shocks are so impressive for factory. I will admit aftermarket is growing but it's still pathetic compared to the Tacomas. I'm not sure about the people reviewing but I am seriously loving the deisel torque off-road. It moves along great at higher speed off-road and crawls amazing! I honestly think both the TRD and ZR2 are fantastic. Biggest downside for me about the ZR2 is no manual. The auto works great but I do miss having 3 pedals. We shall see how it stands the test of time! Still a Toyota guy at heart though! I just wanted to try something new. Please don't ban me :p

Any problems with the paint, I've been hearing a few complaints there?

I also heard the ZR2 had it's first "Major" recall!

HaHa! I hadn't seen that Recall yet but thank you for the heads up! To answer your question the paint seems to be holding up fine so far. Seems like every other modern vehicle quality. No perfect but def not bad.
