I used the Meguiar's smooth clay this time. Had used Mother's prior.

I've found all clays to be about the same in performance. What's up with that?

Just a bit of advice for anyone using a clay bar for the first time on their truck, use a cleaner wax before you clay to avoid your clay bar getting really dirty and creating swirls. Then follow with a pure wax...

If you getting junk off with a cleaner wax, then where do you think its going as you smear it around and remove from paint. o_O If truck is that bad then it’s going to need a paint correction at the end of the day.

The correct order is clay first. So you get the above surface bonded contaminants off. So you don't dislodge them and create scratches when waxing.

Any swirls left from claying will then be removed with the cleaner wax (assuming it's got some abrasives).

I guess I was wrong, time to go back to the drawing board and re-evaluate my detailing.

No harm done, really. 99.999% of people that wax their cars probably never heard of claying a vehicle :) Nor will they ever attempt it.

Probably the soap at the car wash strips wax off the best.

Isn't it amazing the volume of particles that the clay picks up? Stuff you hardly notice until after.

    I just buy new ones....once & done.

I can also do my entire truck with one bar. I generally do the hood, windshield, roof and cap roof annually (those horizontal surfaces). The rest of the truck every other year.

Another thing to look into if you want to spend less time claying is iron x or a similar product and a clay mitt. It will easily cut your time in half and the clay mitt can be used 30+ times. Unlike clay, if you drop it on the ground you can rinse it off and keep going.

Missing out. It really helps to keep the paint cleaner between washings.

And it prevents you from swirling the living daylights out of your paint job when sealing/waxing.

Can't wait to clay it once I get the time and energy to wash it first!
