I think I'll be switching to a lower octane after realizing this. I use 91 and shift at 2K RPM, feather foot.

I work for a GM dealership. The 6.0 was having this issue. Mainly after shut off, Hydrocarbons would head towards the breather box. Well, due to the hot tb, intake, and everything else, it would just build up carbon. (hence the charcoal secondary air filter mod.). I'm sorry, not foot to the floor for 30 seconds. I mean, wot (wide open throttle) for about 10, then hold it at about 3,500 rpm for 30 seconds. MAKE SURE TO DO IT OUTSIDE!!!!! You may need to disconnect the battery afterwards so that the throttle body can relearn its new position. Any more questions?

How often do you change your oil? When was the last time you had the PCV replaced? Clogged PCV valve can cause this condition. I think it's listed in the maintenance booklet as a "recommended" item, but not required to maintain warranty.

Picture of gunked up vs new PCV valve from http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/pcv-replace/

passenger side valve cover. under the air box. there is a tube running from it to the throttle body. I don't think our PCV's are replaceable? Looking more into it now..see below

    edit:
follow this tube back to the valve cover. remove it from the valve cover. Its a golden color 90 bend. Take it out and clean it.

I clean mine every other oil change, or just when I want to do something to my truck. Started at 15k and I have NEVER seen it like that. Surprised Toyota doesn't make this scheduled maintenance...

Thanks. Where did you get that diagram. I would love to have diagrams of the engine bay so I can learn more about my Taco.

Toyota recommends and Service/Inspection of valves at 60k. They don't have a replacement increment.

+1! someone smart please explain how carbon (from combustion) deposits UPSTREAM from any combustion chamber. i dont get it.

i'm pretty sure that is not carbon.

PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. When gases leak through the piston rings into the crankcase the PCV valve sends them back into the intake. Thats why it's carbon.

Good shit huh? I've read the one about our engines a few times, and browsed the service manual on and off.

Anyways, back to topic; nothing out of the normal for your TB to have that much buildup. Just clean it up real well, and begin making this a habit to clean every so often. Not every other leap year. :sandwich:

I cleaned my maf and TB on my '01 has 13Xxxx miles on the 2.7 I4 over the holidays and my TB and intake manifold looked about as dirty as yours. I wouldn't worry seems normal to me, the pcv lets oil vapors into the intake form the crank in the block to prevent build up of pressure caused by blowby on the piston rings during expansion/power cycle. some of the carbon in the vapors builds up, not much you can do unless you remove the hose from the pcv to intake and vent to atmosphere.
