I was planning to do a writeup on the spring/cams install and the lifter adjustments. Anyone else doing one?

Not sure if this was asked or shared with the rest of you all. I asked the question if they have a recommended break-in sequence. This was Kiel's response,

"Yea good question, there is definitely a run in process.

The first and most important part is, use the cam lube that we supply and don’t be shy with it, rub that shit in like you’re oiling up Miss Universe (or Mr Universe if that’s what you’re into)

Afterwards it’s as per any flat tappet cam really, prime the oil system as best you can, sometimes you can used pressurized air to push oil around some engines have oil priming ports or sometimes you can simply turn the pump.

You need to also prime the fuel system as much as possible and set the engine up to fire as fast as possible, most cam lobe failures come from the first fire up and most of those come from not having oil where it should be, when it should be.

If the engine won’t fire then stop and regroup, don’t sit on the ignition hoping for a fire. Once it does fire get it off idle immediately, 2000rpm is a good spot, I’ll even cycle revs up and down from 2500-2000 just to make sure the pump is moving oil as soon as possible. Keep doing this for one heat cycle, once the engine has got to temp then you’re pretty much done, there isn’t much more you can do beyond that.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is while the break-in period is super important, even more so is the actual oil being used.

The Rotella diesel deal isn’t the right way to go anymore make sure you’re using a good high zinc oil that is preferably ester synthetic, which will likely mean it’s a race type oil or at least developed by someone who specialises in race oil, think Driven, Royal Purple, Redline etc… most of what you can buy down at the auto store is normally emission friendly or OEM friendly and nothing more, gone are the good old days of having high zinc quality oil available to the masses.

I know everyone has their loves and hates when it comes to oil and that’s cool, but we see too many engines fail because they had junk oil or it was changed too infrequently and most will simply blame the parts because their mates stock Taurus ran for ages on Mobil 1 (junk for the record) so why wouldn’t my modified supercharged truck with aggressive cams and valvetrain…

Hope this helps mate, please do share it up with everyone and make sure you fire me any more questions you have."

This is interesting. My car club is all about Mobil 1 and Rotella, and most run really aggressive cams. Never seen any failures in the club. One of our guys even works for an oil analysis consultant, and he says Mobil 1 rocks. But, I'll still take Kiel's advice.

Just remember. A high anti-wear additive mixture and ester based oil. Redline for example is around 2500 ppm ZDDP.

Find the oil that you like, that meets those requirements he listed, and carry on.

If you cannot find the oil locally, the a bottle of Redline Oil Engine Break-in Oil, will bump up the ZDDP content.

Just for the record, I did end up using the oil pressure sender port for priming the system for my replacement engine startup. Worked amazingly! Just used a CHEAP 1 gallon sprayer, some acrylic hose, a small ball valve, and 1/8"npt adapter for the block. (all in about $30-35 bucks) I'll see if I can post a pic later.

I added about three quarts right before startup and distributed it in the engine. Oil priming made easy!

Since then, I've also cleaned it out and used it to add transmission fluid during a valve body change. Game changer for that application. It's soooooo easy. A few pumps and you let the sprayer send in all the fluid.

Just remember, that oil sensor thread is actually 1/8 BSPT. Just different enough from NPT.
