My rt lower control arm rear bolt was three turns loose. Just today, I also got the clunk when I was almost at a stop with the wheels turned left, as if pulling into a parking spot, and then again when backing out and turning left. My tech buddy grabbed his torque wrench and tightened up the front and rear bolts and no more klunk!

If you get this noise, check the LCA bolts for being loose.

He had me crank the wheel all the way left, put his hand on the UCA and felt nothing when the klunk happened, and noticed the noise coming from down low. Snugged up tight in 3 minutes. Good to go!

Started having this problem about a month or two ago. It happens every time I change direction at about a half-tire rotation to about 2 complete rotations. I think it sounds too loud to be a floating brake pad. Definitely sounds like it is coming from the front end but my spotter and I could not pinpoint if it was coming from the driver or passenger side. It may very well be coming from both. I tightened all four of the lower control arm bolts to spec (100 ft-lbs). All of them were at spec except for the rear bolt on the driver side. It took about an 1/8 to a 1/4 turn. Unfortunately that didn't solve the problem. Still got a clunk.

I have the same issue here now around 68k. Also looked through all these threads and people mentioning it was LCA bolts. Mine are all torqued to 100ft lbs but I still get the clunk when I go in reverse. My driveway has a gutter bump just before the Main Street and that's always where the sound happens. If I baby it real easy down the bump I don't get a clunk. No clunk after backing out with regular driving tho. Also happens right after truck goes in drive and I go forward out of a parking space sometimes, especially when required to make a sharp turn. No idea what is making the noise.

    Just an annoyance really.

    I got 51K on mine.

Yea, exactly-- just about every time I come out of a parking spot. One clunk backing up and then clunk again when I drive forward. Doesn't have anything to do if there is a bump in the road for me. And like I said, it happens after about a half-a- tire rotation so it's after everything in the drive train has been engaged.

I had same issue. Propeller shaft bolts (between rear diff and prop shaft) were loose. Re-torque and problem solved.

Just took some footage of the clunk this morning. Still unable to identify where it is coming from.

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/C_1DLdVkVH8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

You can hear the clunk at:
    0:55
    1:02
    1:03
    1:16

I believe all other noises to be normal.

It happens (just about) every time I change from forward to reverse after about 1-1.5 tire rotations.

Any ideas what it could be?

This is video is a bit more definitive than the last one. There are two distinct clunks which would explain why it is difficult to pinpoint whether the noise is coming from the driver or passenger side-- rather, it is coming from both. I'm starting to lean towards the idea that it is coming from the floating brake pads between the calipers. Supposedly, they are held in by one spring even though there is a spot for a second. I'll see if I can get a camera up in right behind the front wheels.

I just fixed the same problem. It's the brake pads, replaced the shoes and added an extra anti rattle spring. No more clunking sound.

I've never made a post before, but to keep it simple I have a 2010 short bed. I just had the same problem in reverse. My u bolts were loose and I noticed my carrier bearing was showing wear. Replaced it tightened u bolts no more clunk. I have around 90,000 on mine.

We just got a 2005 Prerunner at a Toyota dealer very clean and 70K miles. we have a noise that when we stop at light/signs, and left off the brake pedal the driveshaft lunks/clunks into drive. I thought it was the center support brg, but it was ok. If we stop and let off pedal real slow roll a bit and stop again then let off to go again, it's much less of a lunk.
    anyone have this issue also?

I am fairly sure I have identified the clunk. Apparently the brake pads are floating around the roter and clicking into place when the caliper engages. This would explain why I heard two clunks in previous videos AND why it was difficult to pinpoint whether it was coming from the driver or passenger side.

    https://youtu.be/IIE5XmaGk-E

You can hear the clunks at

    0:08
    0:26
    0:54
    1:00

You can see the pads shift position at

    0:31

Good news is; I think this is not an urgent problem nor safety issue. Bad news is; this clunk is still annoying and makes my 2014 truck sound rickety. There is already an anti-rattle clip on the pads but there is a spot for another one. Toyota gave me one paper-clip thingy per brake when they probably should have given me two paper-clip looking thingies. so I am going to snap one on there and see if that removes the clunk or at least reduces it.

    Anti Rattle Clip.jpg

I'm still a little skeptical though because I was poking around with a screwdriver and I didn't feel any play. Would be shocking to find out that paper-clip does show much.

The video is extended for anyone that likes GoPro gore

Following this closely. I have a 2012 short bed 4x4 TRD OR that just rolled over 80k and I'm having the same issue. I'm gonna poke around a little today and see if I can find anything.

Yes I have this exact problem I've taken my 05 truck to multiple places. One place told me it's my rear diff and wanted to charge me $3800 I took it to a Toyota specialist that said my rear diff is fine. Another place said it was my rear breaks they just cleaned them and no changes happened. I'm thinking it has something to do with my rear driveshaft, slip yolk, or some along those lines.

I had the same problem, easy fix. I also added some brake grease between the back of the pads and shims. If you go that route, take some time to clean the pins and lightly grease. Or replace pins for cheap!

Sounds like is coming from the gears in rear differential.

well just to add to the confusion I had same problem with my '06, reverse with wheel turned to the left one heck of a thunk from the r front area, not a caliper but is a heavy sounding clunk, something not torqued properly, I suspect a new shock replaced during frame replacement. Took it back once and it went away for a couple of weeks but is back. After the hard time I got on the 1st return almost just worth living with unless it gets worse. If your checkbook isn't out those dealers aren't much anxious to converse. '06 with only 60k on it? Wow, that's a find.
