I'm sure you're no retard, so your clutch life will probably be fine if you don't smoke it regularly. TOB will need to be replaced first, probably. Do a clutch then. Don't do a center force (aisin stamped all over it, as in OEM). That's what I had installed and now I have a very perceptible shudder. It smokes just like stock when you get in a tight spot ( like paved parking lot backing a boat around -4 lo not an option). F' in PISSES ME OFF!

I have had my fair share of problems with the clutch in my truck. You are not the only one who has wondered if they purposely made the manuals crappy so no one buys them. Just as an excuse to discontinue them.

However, if they really didn't want to make them anymore, why not just stop making them instead of doing this whole song and dance of warranty work, etc.

Perhaps a TRD supercharger will fix this issue?

Thanks for all the posts gentlemen. I'be been getting that smoke stink just in 2WD reverse. or at least I did for the first 4,000 km. seems to have stopped.

I've learned to backup like a raging savage, even when backing my 5000lb (when full, obviously) water trailer. This is my 2nd 6spd taco, so safe to say I've tried it all on avoiding the burning clutch in reverse. I've even tried the 4Lo option, and even then it can be tricky to do without that lovely smell.

I back up into my driveway almost every day, it has a pretty nice incline to it as well, I get clutch roast smell every time. The only way I can try to lessen the amount of clutch slipping is if I start out in the street and get the clutch all the way out and then gas it up, but then I run the risk of smacking into my garage door or wall if I don't break in time. I try to get as close to the garage as possible since my driveway isn't very long and if I hang out into the sidewalk at all the neighborhood kids might smack in to my truck or something (Had a couple little kids run their skateboards and themselves into my old truck a couple times). So far my only plan is to burn this oem junk clutch up as quickly as possible and get a URD Stage3+ clutch in there so I'm not slipping the clutch every time.

Backed up into a camping spot and my truck was smoking and smelled for a good 15 minutes. I thought user error or defect until I read this post.. now I know it was a bad engineering job. Tonight I tried reversing in my neighborhood with the clutch all the way out and was cruising faster than i do in first gear!

I have 34s, steel armor, and was loaded up with gear so I kind of see why.. getting 5.29s next week so maybe that'll help.

I'll definitely be looking into the 2Lo mod soon though. Smoking the clutch when backing over a tree root is not acceptable to me, even with my current configuration.

Is it just tradition this thread gets revived every three years?

Every 3 years someone thinks something is wrong with their driving and discovers the Toyota engineers don't off-road or tow.

Better continue a thread than to have 500 different ones such as the classic "which lift should I buy."

I just saw the thumb for the thread of a naked person with a wig sitting on a toilet and just had to click.

Yes that is the way to go—just slip it into 4LO, it will be like a dream come true. End of discussion ;)
