Well, yesterday my clutch pedal broke where the rod from the master cylinder contacts the pedal. I was at a very busy intersection in the left turn lane. When the light turned green, I moved my foot up to let out the clutch but the pedal stayed on the floor. I was finally able to lift the clutch pedal off the floor with the toe of my shoe & get out of the middle of the intersection. When I lifted the clutch pedal, there were bits of plastic & the metal rod on the floor of the cab. I have had clutch issues with this truck since new. The dealer replaced my entire clutch pedal assembly in Dec 2010 & throwout bearing under warranty. I had to have it towed in to the dealer. My 3 yr/36k warranty expired 3 weeks ago (April 9) & I have 36,661 miles on the truck. My truck is an 08 Pre Runner w/2.7 & 5 speed manual. Has Toyota updated this POS clutch pedal assembly?

damn that sucks.. but since it was worked on and looked at prior to this hopefully they will repair it free of charge.. maybe you can get an assembly with no plastic parts? i dont know why theyd make a high stress item with plastic

It has been to the dealer several times since new for various clutch issues & noises. The service advisor thinks Toyota will cover it due to my history. The POS clutch pedal assembly is plastic on gen 2 Tacomas. I had a 97 Tacoma I bought when new, then traded in for my 08 which I also bought new. I sure miss my 97 Taco's metal clutch pedal assembly. When they replaced my clutch pedal assembly last December, the service advisor showed me how cheaply the new assembly was made. He was surprised to see what happened to mine. He also said there are lots of Taco's out there with manual trannies but mine is the first he has ever heard of with problems. Guess he doesn't read this forum.......

Toyota should cover it, you have 1 year warranty on parts replaced at least thats what the dealer told me when they replaced my pedal and clutch

i had my plastic one replaced once too, out of warranty. $600. mine had excessive side to side movement, unfortunately over a year later it is starting to do it again.

Good to know, thanks!! The service writer I dealt with printed out the work order from December. At least he's cool about things & good to work with. He even ordered a new assembly as soon as I was towed in, before any mechanics even looked at it. He said that way the pedal assembly would be in this morning.

They will. Toyota will issue a TSB after all of us are past 3 yr/36k so we can't get it replaced for free.

I'm pretty sure most dealerships have some type of grace period, where they will accept your warranty if you're at 36K +a few hundred miles.

Same problems here, bud! Roseville Toyota was great to work with. Two new TOB, pedal assembly, and clutch cylinder. No problems since December, so fingers crossed!!
    Good luck.

I wonder if its just an issue with the 5 speed manuals?? I've got the 6-speed with 4.0L in my truck, i'll watch out for it, thanks for the heads up!

I have had problems with my clutch pedal as well. I had them grease the spring 2-3 times and I think they replaced the assembly once. Now I am out of warranty...

***Update*** Dealer just called, says clutch pedal fine, just the plastic cup the metal rod sits in where it contacts clutch pedal shattered. They will replace that part & warranty will cover it. All I can say is what cheap assed plastic Toyota uses for their clutch pedal parts. Guess I should have a few on hand for the next time.

Pretty soon they're going to start making driveshafts out of plastic.

I forgot to mention in my first post, my clutch pedal was making creaking & groaning noises from the pedal a few days before the part broke. So, I don't know if that was a warning from that cheap POS part or just a coincidence. I'm supposed to get the truck back today. We'll see how it is then.

OK, last update. Got truck back, clutch pedal feels great & no noise for now. Part that broke was part # 31404-04010, Clevis Sub-Assy, cyl. Toyota parts barn has it for $23.20, website says MSRP is $31.35 for the assy. Might be something to check if you start hearing creaking & groaning noises from the clutch pedal assy.
