OK....so I'm too busy to keep it up to date every 3 months....sorry to all.

The dang thing has held in there for over a year. No squeaks, no bronze flakes. It seems to work just fine.

my clutch squeaks too - is it safe to say that the tutorial URL you posted in your first post would work with later models of tacomas also?
    I have a 08 4x4 access cab.

Any updates on how the new bushing are holding up? I installed a plastic one last year and it is squeaking again. I might try using the bronze bushing. My clutch spring is already cutting into the frame. Hope the bronze bushing will still work.

    Hi,
My 02 Taco has been squeaking for about 2 years now. I just went over 100K and decided to get rid of the squeak
I've read these sites and a friend and I took a couple hours on Saturday to replace the U bushing.
Once we got it out, (The attached instructions in this thread are perfect BTW) the bushing was fine, but one of the two white bushings that the spring loads into was trashed. That must be where my squeak was coming from. Made a trip to the Toyota dealer got two new bushings ($4.56 each) put everything back together and all is good.

One more thing, I read that the U bushing is brittle so I had purchased two, just in case. That was a really GOOD idea. The first install snapped hard into place and the U bushing broke in two. We put the second one in and all is good.

Thanks to all on this thread.
This was an easy fix to my Taco!

It took about 3 hrs from park to drive off using a few very long extensions, 12 mm sockets and wrenches, hammer, gloves, vise, dremel, and a very patient steady hand. I'd say most of the time was spent making small cuts with the dremel, checking for fit, cutting a bit more, checking again.
To anyone doing this fix, I suggest patience and a lot more time than you think it'll take.
Getting the clutch assembly back in took another helping hand, but it went solo otherwise. The two side bearings will need to be specific sized. More specifically, the size I didn't get. Only because I had to grind down the outside diameter a bit. Otherwise it was a perfect fit. (Purchased: 1/4 x 3/8 x 15/32 x 1/2, hillman bronze flange bearing)
I'll try to get some pics and maybe a video posted of the cut bearings if anybody wants it.

Because after doing it twice, I'm still not able to make a bearing which will not break after a few months of use. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Obviously something. I'll take pics of what I've done.
I'll try again this weekend, pushing the clutch pedal and hearing the ticking sound is driving me nuts.

The squeak was driving me nuts... so I followed this thread. My observations:

The end attachment points didn't seem to me to be the culprit, but since I had it apart, I went ahead and fashioned some bearings/inserts. I did have to shave them down quite a bit to make them fit into the clutch pedal mounting bracket, but, I think they'll now outlast the truck. Below is a picture of what I used for the side mounting points. I got this piece from Lowe's.

The center point seemed to me to be the main cause of the squeak. I worked for a couple days and finally came to the conclusion that the bronze material was just too soft. I couldn't bend it around the width of the spring without grinding it down to the point that it was too thin. I ultimately settled on a chrome steel piece of virtually the exact same size as the bronze piece that wasn't working. I got this piece from Home Depot. I did shorten the piece slightly, and, I made a smaller cut on the outside. What eventually worked was to not attempt to force the new piece over the spring, but rather to start at one of the ends of the spring and slide it around the curves and ultimately to the center of the spring. Once I had it at the center of the spring and lined up so that the new piece was in place where I wanted it, I dabbed a healthy drop of Gorilla glue to secure the piece to the clutch bracket. Once I was satisfied everything was going to stay where I wanted it, I applied a good amount of anti-seize to the three attachment points.

I've had this in place for about a week, and mercifully, not a single squeak since. I've been living with this squeak for over a decade; hopefully it's a thing of the past.

    Tacomaki: Thanks man.

    Questions?

I just performed this little operation, and it took me roughly three hours with trip to Lowe's included.

I used a steel spacer from the specialty tools section (see photo).

I used a Dremel tool to cut the spacer horizontally, so it'd fit over the spring. I also used the Dremel to trim the sides so it'd fit into the groove thingamajig that the spring snaps into.

I used a vice to compress the spring, so I could remove it. Getting it back on was challenging.

Ultimately, a vice and a Dremel are very handy for this job.

Now that I'm done, the clutch pedal has the snap that it did the day I bought it.

    Great tip!

For reference, this is out of a 2004 Tacoma S runner.

So over the last three days or so my clutch has randomly stuck to the floor. It has happened about three times only, in the three days I have driven my 96 taco to work and back, about 80 miles and had no problems. I have heard a squeak but I think I tune it out now. But the pedal has stuck to the ground.

Do you believe the U-busing on the pedal arm could cause the pedal to stuck as well?
