I have an 11 4cyl 5spd Taco with 40,000 km on it. Having a bit of trouble with the clutch and had it to the Toyota dealer assuming it was covered under the 5yr 100000 km warranty. They want $350 to replace the clutch slave cylinder. The problem is I don't think there is anything wrong with the slave cylinder as it isn't leaking or bleeding back when clutch is depressed. I usually do my own work but I am in the middle of a move and all my gear is packed up + I have no time to look at it.
    Symptoms:
Clutch peddle squeaks when moving through travel.
Peddle has stuck to the floor on a couple of occasions and had to hook my toe under it to release.
Occasionally slips when ascending a hill in 3rd or 4th under load. No, I don't ride the clutch or drive with my foot on it!
My feeling is there is a problem with the pressure plate or linkage and replacing the slave cylinder will be $350 thrown down the drain!

Appreciate any experience or advice on this.

I realize that clutch may have to be replaced but as I mentioned in the post I am trying to get some good feedback on what the problem may be other than slave cylinder. I am assuming premature clutch failure would be covered under powertrain warranty. I am the only driver and have been driving stick shifts for 40 years and this is the first clutch problem for me.

Most dealers will not warranty a clutch and I would not blame them.

The clutch is a wear item and they have no idea how you drive regardless of what you say. ( I am not doubting you ).

Not too concerned about the clutch friction disc itself. Just trying to find the root cause of the problem. I have talked to a couple of mechanics and both of them suspect a problem other than the slave cylinder . I thought that by posting here, someone would chime in with a similar experience or has some knowledge of the clutch setup on this particular Taco. I have no problem paying for legitimate repairs but do have a problem throwing money at bad diagnosis's

I might be mistaken but arent there both a master and slave cylinder on you clutch. My 98 tacoma clutch pedal would move to the floor and they said they replaced a master cylinder on clutch.

    Update:
The slave cylinder is the problem. The outer end of the cylinder is corroded causing the piston to bind when clutch peddle is depressed. New slave cylinder on the way.
