Clutch slipping when cold...

    So I have noticed lately that my clutch has started to slip when cold. It only lasts for the first few min of driving. Then drives perfectly normal. I got this truck used about 10k ago. Total miles on the truck is about 49k.

    So, Life span will vary depending on use. I get that but what is the general life span on factory clutches?
    Should I go with a flywheel, clutch kit, throw out etc all in one shot? I am thinking yes so I can remove any questions about how that was used/abused by previous owner.

    Thoughts from those with a six speed 4.0??

    The clutch can last 10k to 600k. But on average I see them go around 100,000miles.

    You always replace the set, no shop will replace the disc alone. I would go aftermarket simply due to cost. I like SACHS and Exeddy for clutch kits.

    Also you should have the flywheel resurfaced during this process.

    Some would suggest to do the accumulator delete during your replacement as well. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mt-accumulator-delete-mod-adm-and-bs-thread.568303/ I would leave it alone but its a good read.

    I replaced my clutch at 90k on my truck. The pressure plate and friction disk were worn out (the fingers on the pressure plate especially) and the release bearing was toast (that's why I dug in, the bearing was squealing).

    I found my flywheel was OK but the previous owner must not have been a great stick shift driver because it had been burned at some point based on the discoloration. I resurfaced mine and kept it.

    I ended up needing to do a release bearing sleeve because the snout was grooved. I went with the Aisin CKT-057 kit (which is complete) and TSK44 bearing kit.

    Point being 50k seems a little early but based on what I found I think 100k on a 2nd gen 6MT clutch is probably pushing the limits.

    I agree. I thought 50 was early too. However I feel like I am adding some things up in this one. I feel like they couldn’t drive a stick. I believe the clutch was ridden. The first 1-2 inches is nothing. I don’t think they ever took their foot off the clutch. This makes me think there is overheating, premature wear etc..... I need to adjust it.

    Depending on what is possible for you, and what is not, I would try driving it out as long as you can before it's unreasonably bad. Then go to town. If you have the trans down, easily resurface the flywheel, replace (I would doubt the teeth are clapped out, but at least inspect the damn thing... but that would be done during a resurface anyways... or should be), and toss in whatever gear you want/can afford. It's always easier once it's apart, do it once, not twice.
