Thanks everyone here for the info! Switched the torsion spring out with the Toyota 4-cyl linear clutch spring, don't miss that squeak at all.

If I can ever remember to snag this damn spring when I go to ACE I need to do this. Does it also alleviate the issue of the pedal not returning 100% to the top? I.E you don't have to use your foot to get the pedal to the top

when does that issue usually start with pedal not coming all the way back up?
is it more a function of use or time elapsed 'age'
IDK, no problems here yet other than the seasonal squeak that a good lube alleviates

Ever since I've owned the truck it does it. The last 1.5" I have to lift it up with my foot. To engage the cruise control I have to lift my foot up. Not a big deal as I've gotten accustomed to it, I even do it in my Supra (which does not need the pedal to be moved up)

    Yes.

It's a use thing. Each time the clutch pedal is pressed it wears a little. Lots of stop and go and it will happen a lot sooner than mostly highway miles.

The fix is sooooo easy there is no reason to put up with that crap.

    cool thanks,
i have been looking at what i can remove to access that area easier, the bottom plastic panel under the steering wheel might be the way to go

I don't know that removing that panel would help any. I just layed on my back and stuck my head under there. Wasn't too bad, but I'm not a very big guy. Removing the driver's seat might help give you more room, and is pretty easy to get out.

Fyi True Value in my area (Pittsburgh PA) has a made in USA #70 spring in stock for $2.99

The ends are U-shaped but you can still hook them around where they need to go on the truck.

removing that panel you say you cannot see the spring and associated parts straight head on eye level while kneeling on the ground outside :notsure:

It's kind of tucked up in there. If you can see it well enough that way to work on it great. I had better luck laying on my back on the floorboard, but what ever works for you.

ahh, nothing really much works for me anymore in my old age
i tried a mirror by the gas pedal but that was difficult to look at and keep good hand eye coordination

Seriously if you can, do this. When I did the mod a year ago I was in the process of swapping engines and was so tired of having everything torn apart I didn't want to remove the seat (or parts of the dash like I had seen originally)

The only way I could get my hands and face in a position to work and see what I was doing was to do a contortionist style head stand with the back of my head almost on the gas and brake and my butt half on the seat half in the door jamb.. I'm 6'2" and in my 30's. I got it done, but cursed and wished I was 19 again the entire time

I did this mod a few months ago, just popped the torsin spring out and put the linear spring in.( Toyota pn# 90507-14030 ) A couple of days later the arm where the torsin spring sat started strumming on the linear spring and drove me nuts. I pushed the linear spring over as far as it would go and that solved the problem temporarily, every now and then that arm would start strumming the spring again and I would have to push it over. Today, since I am not working thanks to C-19, I took the pedal and bracket out and cut the welds to the spring arm and knocked that sucker off and reassembled everything. Now it is quiet and no squeaks or strumming of the linear spring.

Can you take a photo of the bracket you broke off? I’m doing this mod and would love to make sure it’s done correctly the first time :bananadance:

Okay, see the tab in red? Cut the weld with a cut off wheel and knock that off with a hammer and reassemble. Good luck!

Awesome, got the job done and it works way better than that POS factory clutch return spring! Thanks so much!

I'm glad that worked out for you, I am happy with mine. It seemed like with the old setup I was changing that plastic u bushing every 8-12 months. Now it's gone.
