When you say that they would not cover it, did they diagnose it correctly? What did they tell you was the failing component? Is it truly that component?

Was it a sensor, air pump, manifold, switching valve....?

If they think it's the sensor, that's most likely 3/36 as it's an electrical component, but if it's found that the code from the 3/36 sensor is actually because of an 8/80 component...

I'm curious to hear what the ACTUAL failed part was determined to be, and I might recommend a visit to a second dealer for their opinion.

To accelerate the activation of catalyst when warming up the engine, the air injection system pumps the secondary air to the exhaust manifold by pressure. The secondary air is supplied by the air pump and it is pumped to the exhaust manifold through the air switching valve. Open and close movement of the air switching valve is regulated by the Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV).The air pump and the air switching valve are observed by the Engine Control Module (ECM) and are used to detect malfunction in this system. The ECM monitors the secondary air injection system and detects malfunction using a pressure sensor located on the air switching valve.

The ECM observes the pressure in the secondary air passage using the pressure sensor located on the air switching valve in the secondary air injection system. The sensor detects an exhaust pressure in the secondary air passage.

Possible causes
- Faulty Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV)
- Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) harness is open or shorted
- Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty Pressure Sensor
- Faulty Air Switching Valve

When is the code detected?
If the Engine Control Module (ECM) receives the pulsation signal from the sensor despite the ECM ordering the VSV to close the air switching valve, or if the ECM has not received the signal from the sensor despite the ECM ordering the VSV to open the valve, the ECM interprets this as a fault in the secondary air injection system and the code is set.

Based upon what I used to see at the Hyundai service dept. I worked in, valves and sensors most likely would not be covered, but who knows? I do recommend contacting Toyota corporate, but you'll want to know the name of the actual failed component. Did you pay for diag?

 

It's the secondary injection valve stuck closed. I just showed him your post, he said it doesn't pertain in this situation.

Suggest to talk to the service manger. Have them put this explanation/excuse down on paper so you can fax it to Toyota Corporate Office.

You need to man up, set up an appointment to see the Service Manger. Take the emission warranty book in with you. Talk to him about the code and what they found. Show him the page about the warranty and if he disagrees ask to set up an appointment with the district manager. The squeaky wheel gets all the attention.

 

I just finished up my second conversation with the 1800 number folks. It is not covered under the 8/80. I'm on my own. Now it's in Limp mode...can't even drive it.

The systems in question have been affected by moisture in the pumps and valves, resulting in the illumination of the check engine light. While the injection system has no impact on the core function of the engine, the problem has reportedly cost some consumers as much as $4,000 to fix. In an ongoing effort to ensure customer satisfaction, Toyota has recently introduced a Customer Support Program to extend the warranty coverage on air injection pumps and air switching valves.

This program will extend the warranty on air induction pump assemblies and air injection switching valves for the condition described to 10 years from the date of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. These vehicles were previously covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. When the condition is verified, the dealer will replace the air injection pumps and air switching valves in the affected vehicles. Owners of Tundra and Sequoia models covered by this extended warranty will receive an Owner Letter via first class mail with details about the Customer Service Program. There are approximately 477,000 Tundra (2007 to 2010 Model Year) and 57,000 Sequoia (2008 to 2010 Model Year) vehicles covered by this Customer Service Program. Please note that damage incurred by accidents, abuse, vandalism, or similar events are not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty or the Warranty Extension.

An owner who has already paid for the repair of this specific condition affecting air injection systems should refer to the owner letter upon receipt for reimbursement consideration instructions. Not every model produced in this time period will display air injection system malfunctions. All vehicles comply with Toyota’s rigorous durability and quality standards. The condition described impacts only a small number of air injection pumps and air switching valves. I just listened to a message left from the corp. office. They are now in contact with my dealer to try and get in covered. I don't know what is going on, but its looking a little better.
