I replaced the transmission fluid and went ahead and replaced the front differential, transfer case and rear differential fluid too. It was all very muddy and probably hasn't been done on this truck before. I also noticed that the clutch reservoir was bone dry, so I topped that off and the clutch feels much better now. The clutch reservoir being dry could have been helping the problem. With all the time I spend under the hood, I don't know how I didn't notice it being empty. Amazing how Toyotas will just keep running. Anyway, I'll have to wait for more colder weather to come in to get a true test for shifting, but it drives very well in normal weather so far.

Oh, also I didn't have magnets on my drain plugs for the transmission and transfer case. Is this normal? Both the front and rear diffs had magnets.

Another common thing to happen with these manuals at high mileage, is the shifter bushing starts to crumble apart beneath the shifter, and can make it difficult to get the shifter into gear. Marlin Crawler and Low Range Offroad sell upgraded shifter seat bushings to replace the factory ones that fall apart

A couple people have mentioned this. Is this a hard job to replace the shifter bushing?

Nope, just have to disassemble the shifter and pop it out. I think there are a couple YT videos floating around on it actually

Update: So some snow rolled in and the truck didn't even bat an eye at it. Shifts great in the cold again.

I'm no expert, but as I understand it the synchronizers have to force the film of oil between them and the face of the next gear out of the way before things can happen properly. After the film of oil is forced out only then can the syncronizer do it's job. Better lube can certainly help. It must be of the correct viscosity.

I replaced my MT with OEM synthetic and it still shifts crappy below 40 degrees (pretty much locked out of 2nd when rolling) until it warms up, then starts functioning normally…..makes pulling out into traffic on a cold morning kinda dangerous. 1st sticks a little too. Took it to the dealership - mechanic said normal but I’m guessing he let it warm up for 20 minutes before jumping in.
