Who sent me that flashlight? Is it a company I can purchase more of? It might be a hot seller here at work, way brighter then what the tool dealers sell. Streamlite has nothing on this for useable light.

I have an XRC9.5k winch and want to relocate the solenoid under the hood on the driver's side just behind the fuse box. Can anyone share some knowledge as to what size wire I'll need from the solenoid to the winch and where to buy? I need 7-8' per leg.

 

How many amps does the winch draw?

EDIT: That winch draws 435A at full load. If all of that goes through the solenoid you will need 600 or 700 kcmil wire depending on which wire type you get. That sounds absurdly large since those wires have a diameter between 3/4" and 1". I'm not familiar with winch operation so maybe the full electrical load doesn't pass through the solenoid? Maybe someone else can chime in.

 

Yea it's gonna be hard to fit that big of wire in there. I wonder if I can get away with 0 or 2 awg wire

So I did some more research and the full load does pass through the solenoid. However, the wire sizes I mentioned are what should be used for continuous duty at those amperages. Obviously winches aren't designed to operate continuously for long periods of time so smaller wires can be used. It seems as though many people out there are using 2 gauge wire but some I've seen are using up to 4/0. Basically it comes down to what you can fit/afford, use the biggest you can to maximize your winches potential.

 

Thanks for taking the time to check it out. I think 2 gauge is the way to go since I don't think 4/0 will fit.

 

When I extended my last solenoid into the engine bay I used 2GA wire from NAPA to get get the length I needed. 8' of red and black cost me $115.
