    Hi,

I’m new here and I wanted to share my story with my 2017 Tacoma.

I purchased it in april 2021 at 103 000KM (64 000 miles) So no warranty from manufacturer, at 120 000KM (74 500 miles) in February 2022 I had misfire engine code in cylinder 5 and random misfire code (check engine light is on and stability track light on) So I go to my local garage and change all 6 spark plug and I had to change ignition coil in cylinder 5 because there was oil on it…

About 3 weeks after I notice a weird noise from my engine it’s not knocking mostly ticking but didn’t sound good at all, I live in northern Quebec last winter we had 3 week with temperature of -40 degree Celsius (minus 100 Fahrenheit) So I was no big deal, it’s my first winter with the truck it’s probably the cold…

Since then, the noise just got worst and worst, so in May 2022 I go to my Toyota dealer where I bought the truck and ask for transmission oil change, transfer case oil change etc, I ask them to look at the engine noise… Answer was your engine is knocking, will need further investigation but maybe you can do another 60 000 miles without any problem… So, I was ok no big deal I will wait and see…

So now we are in September 2022 and it’s worst than ever, so I took the truck to the dealer I now have 143 000KM (88 500 miles) on the truck I ask my dealer to put a camera in my cylinder and have a look at the problem… I had a call they said it’s the worst engine they have seen to date…. I need a new short block….

I mostly drive the truck on pavement road my daily commute to work is 32 miles one way so 64 miles a day, so miles added quickly on the truck…

Today I received a quote from my dealer to fix the truck… the quote is 10 400$ Canadian so 7580$ USD

I was shocked…. To me it’s the worst buy I’ve done in my entire life, in my town we are 4 Tacoma owner with the same engine noise… I will get the truck fix but to me it’s my last Toyota for sure…

I hope my story will help someone one day…

I will add photo of the repair process and everything really soon...

Just to note -40c is actually -40f as well. That happens to be the point where the two temp scales meet.

Sucks OP and I hate it for you (or any of us that happen upon this shait luck.)

Does anyone have ideas on getting a low mileage junkyard swap instead of having the dealer rebuild? I'd think the upside to a dealer rebuild is a warranty of some sort (I sure as hell hope for 7.5k).

I've never needed an automotive engine swap, but I did on my motorcycle. Bought a non-local one on eBay. It has been good to go for about 40k miles now.

For the OP, a proper diagnosis earlier on might have mitigated the issue? Other instances seem to have just the head swapped?

Pretty sure Toyota's warranty on parts is pretty crap(12months?), not sure on powertrain though.

Junkyard engines can also come with warranties and usually a standard 6 month part replacement (for junkyards I've used) with optional extended for extra $$$ is the norm.

car-parts.com is a pretty good website to search junkyard inventories for parts but I'm not too sure how much its used up in Canada.

    OME and worth every penny.
I'd see a shop. Sure curious what caused 'worst they have seen'.

Water? Oil? Broken ring or piston?

Good point. Maybe the need for a crap-ton of billable shop hours?

i'm wondering if the temperature differential from going from -40 F to 190 F in a few minutes cracked the block. if all the tacoma's in your town have the same noise, maybe the aluminum is prone to cracking. i've seen some pics here of people with cylinder wall number 6 cracked (2GR-FKS).

do you use a block heater to start the engine?

With a $7,600 repair I'd buy $200 flexible block heaters and glue them to the engine and plug in at home moving forward to mitigate in the future.

I bought my truck with 6 miles on it and at 83k miles it's still got the same weird tick to the engine and the truck has never been started below 20* F.

I would bet that the previous owner of that truck sold it because of that code. This is one of the reasons that buying a used anything today can be a gamble. For a used vehicle, I would check the OBD history to make sure the drive monitors are complete. This would indicate, at very least, that the vehicle has been driven sometime since last DTC clear (if any). I would also scrub the VIN history for recent dealership visits. OP, I hope you can get it resolved. I personally would look at a used engine with warranty and not make a repair there.
