OP says he needs a short block?
A short block doesn’t typically include heads.

Hopefully the dealership knows for sure the heads are good. If they aren’t, and the short block is already there and ready to drop in. You’re at the mercy of the dealership.

I’d make sure you really don’t need a long block.

They probably saw a cylinder wiped out from poor lubrication. Virtually all automotive engines now have parent-bore blocks, meaning there are no removable cylinder liners. One damaged cylinder means the whole block is junk.

im inclined to agree with the guy warning about used vehicles. without an known history this truck appears to have been abused and traded in. Not sure how this reflects poorly on toyota without knowing the real cause of the failure.

what kind of abuse only messes up one cylinder?

(and so far, appears to not affect anything else?)

carelessness when changing out spark plugs, a single piece of metal let loose (washer etc) in the intake. It only takes one piece of debris to cause 1 cylinder to get abused.

I suppose, but that’s so unlikely on such a low mile engine. Why would they have it apart to begin with

yes a used vehicle can cause issues.

but for real thou most people that own these trucks and keep it stock that long just drive it back and forth to work and maybe to carry a bit of trash once and awhile so it would be a bit odd to say this one was abused when its bone stock... now it could have had a factory defect and the person noticed an issue and ditched it now this is a more probable thing to have had happen since no company is perfect!

And yet we have 24+ instances of the engines failing on this site alone with similar issues

    are they all abuse?

i mean the 3.5 has made windows on its own in cylinder 6 :notsure:

there is also reports of valve issues on them as well anything can happen! hell it could have been a poorly tightened something and it just now failed

ford was having issues with the 2.7 for awhile i think it had to do with valves? and they would literally fall out which as we know isnt a good thing haha but it turned out to be something very simple and they fixed it sometimes something like this could fly under the radar or there isnt enough having the issue for toyota to issue a recall

jumping to conclusions, why dont you just wait and find out what really happened to the engine?

its oil pooling in the valve train because of steep angles. the whole point of "stating facts" is actually knowing the facts lol

Let's see those 24 examples with this similar issue. A scope will show issues with a cylinder wall and they said it needs a short block. So this isnt the valve issue based on the limited info op has given.

The 3.5 is not a parent bore nor a traditional liner block. It's a cast aluminum block with embedded liners, specifically thin spiny cast-iron liners. Embedded means non-replaceable, and thin means no overboring - at least per Toyota. So yeah throw away, but not for the reason you mention.
