Complete list of tools, sockets and wrenches for 1st Gen Tacoma

I have been looking for a complete list of sockets and wrenches that are needed to work on the 1st gen Tacomas. While I've found @Crom's list for 2nd Gen's, I can't find such a list for us First Gen folks.

I am willing to compile and keep this list. If you have good information let me know and I'll add it to this list. I've also made an interactive sortable/filterable spreadsheet available here.

17mm brake caliper mounting bolts
17mm cam gear bolts

I thought the crank pulley bolt was 19mm? Confirm?

I tried to play with the one drive and got confused

 

Fuel filter wrench 14mm line wrench along with a 17 line wrench ? I AM NOT 100% on the sizes but worth a mention

I’ll confirm the fuel filter needs a 14mm and 17mm flare nut wrench, did two last weekend.

 

I believe spring perches are 19mm (replaced a spring but its been a while)

@turbodb, that searchable list is very impressive, I've got it saved to my favorites for future reference. Thanks for the hard work involved in setting it up.

 

3/8 wobble extensions, at least one at 16”. Magnetic parts tray. Bandaids, iodine... pick up a jar of anti seize and use it but try not to get it all over everything you and your family own. One drop of it has been known to cover 16k sq feet...

I just get confused !

I guess I am old school and my mind is old fashioned . I am still used to hardware measurements the size of the threads not the wrench size.

 

LOL! How does that work for places like fuel lines, where you've got a flare nut? In that case, don't you just need the size of the tool?

But man, it'd be cool to also have all the bolt/thread sizes captured as well for each of these locations. Would make bolt replacement/acquisition so much easier when one walks off while working on the truck!

 

Like anything else you learn the size of the wrench the different flare nuts use.

When you work on heavy equipment you learn fast.

Toyota uses a 10mmx1.0 flare nut on the 3/16"/ 4.75mm brake lines that takes a 10mm wrench

Then I was told that making brake lines is beyond the ability of those on here.

 

I'm sure that's true. The brake lines are easy, since they are all the same size. But then there's the flare nuts on the fuel, steering, A/C lines... too much for my small brain to keep track of.

Thinking about this more, length of the bolts would be important for this "bolt size" list as well. I've picked up a bunch of M6, 8, 10, and 12 bolts/nuts/washers a while back, but I never really know that I'll have the right length. Of course, everything's worked out so far, but who knows in the future.

Front Differential needs a 10mm Hex socket for the drain and fill plugs

Its been a while since I changed the fluid there but I think that is right, please correct me if I am wrong.

There is also this page for torque specs that use for reference with the difference of opinion about the oil drain and transmission drain plugs which I use 20 ft-lbs (per Haynes) as long as you use new crush washer, 2003 is an old truck and I am not going to strip this, I have not had a leak. All the rest seem appropriate pay attention to conversions (at bottom) from inch-pound to foot-pound and newton-meter:

Transfer case is 24mm for both drain and fill.

 

Darn well something I did in that area needed the 10mm Hex socket, maybe the front diff. I know I bought the socket for it and did the fluid replace job.

Edit: Yes I just verified the exploded view of the front diff. and the drain and fill plugs are 10mm Hex. As with any of the transfer case, front and back diff, open the filler plug first! to make sure you can refill it. It would be a worse thing to have no fluid after draining it to then realize you can't get the fill plug released.

Thanks turbodb for double checking me. I would not intentionally send someone down the wrong path.
