It's a program that will tidy up and fix errors in your computer registry. The registry manages the programs and functions of the computer.
If you are having performance issues or think you have been attacked by a virus- a trusted regedit program/cleaner may help you get back where you were before. If you aren't having any issues...Well..It ain't broke- don't be trying to fix it.

ccLEANER will allow you to rewrite over deleted files and clean up pretty good. It updates very frequently.

after ensuring there's no spyware or viruses, defrag! most people neglect that and unfortunately xp doesn't do it automatically.

    Start > Run > type "dfrg.msc" w/o quotes > Hit Enter

Click on drive C: then hit Defragment

I do that after my Anti virus runs a scan, and I dump the "Virus Vault". :)

How long you have the OS on your PC? If you have it for like 2 years, I suggest you back up the files that you want, than do a clean re-install OS back. No matter what you try, you only will screw it up more. I will not suggest using any registry fix program. it will make it worse.

Uh oh......I just ran a ccleaner. It seems to run a bit faster. The OS and the computer are only a few months old, but I got rid of some things that I didnt want on it. When I did this it seemed to run slower. Things like the Norton anti virus, and some other stuff. Turns out, it was never removed all the way, even though I removed it thru the "add/remove" program.

Chris, ccleaner, or crap cleaner as it stands for, is awesome software. I use it on all my computers at work, and my home computers. It does not screw things up at all, and comes highly recommended. Go ahead and do the cleaner scan and the registry scan, and don't sweat it... Just make sure you save a registry backup before you fix the issues that it finds (it will prompt you to save it).

I already used it. I didnt have it back up anything, as I dont have anything really on this computer yet. And I have some recovery disks if anything goes wrong. :)

So, you got your computer working better Chris? It is good you got rid of Norton. Most viruses today are specifically made to hit Norton with a vengeance. I have been using AVG and only had a prob once because some kind of virus stopped avg from running current updates.

Computer is working great! Im useing the ccleaner, and I had a computer genius do some house cleaning in it. He said everything looked pretty good, except a couple of files, iirc. Anyway, YES, Norton sucks. It came pre installed on the computer, and I noticed it was getting slower and slower as time moved on. When I removed it and installed AFG, things were MUCH better. :)
