I have a 2014 mt OR Tacoma. I am curious if i am able to convert this to a 2wd by getting rid of the front driveshaft diff and front axles. i have 2wd knuckles from a friend so that wont be a problem. In my head this seems like it will work but i'm wondering if i will run into any problems anywhere.

I know this seems kinda silly. All i see is people converting the other way around.

One of the biggest issues you’re going to run into is your truck will no longer have 4x4....

It's doable you don't need 2wd spindles unless they already have the bearings in them otherwise you just need to put 2wd bearings in your spindles. You'll have to keep your t-case unless you modify your trans x-member and stick a 2wd trans in it and a 2wd driveshaft. Essentially you'll be doing everything backwards of a 2wd to 4wd swap.

Gonna greatly reduce it's resale value if you go through with this, if that's something that matters to you anyway.

4x4s bring in better value in the first place, but I imagine a 4x4 --> 2wd conversion will hurt this truck's resale even more.

What's the reasoning behind wanting to do this? Only one I've seen on here that did it was because they were building a custom turbo race truck out of it and the 4wd components were unnecessary weight/risk.

Mods please move this to 3rd gen forum. There's no way this can be anything but.

Op: the only benefit I can think of is fuel & maintenance. But the drawback is loss of resell value, likely in great excess of what you'll save in maintenance nickel & dime expenses.

    Is it possible? Sure! :sawzall::welder:

Stating the obvious but.... 4x4 trucks are worth more than 2wd trucks. Why not sell yours, buy a similar 2wd truck, pocket the extra cash and save the headache of doing a conversion?

You don't buy a truck for its fucking fenders!
    2.5" lift w/35's
All you have to do is remove the CV's and let all the diff fluid drain out. Then remove 4X4 stickers and you now have a 2wd

I can almost bet some one on here will trade you their pre runner plus cash for your 4x4. Also lay off the acid

How about a manual hub conversion so you can disengage the 4x4 stuff without totally diminishing the value of your truck?

This and building a street/race truck are the only reasons I could see wanting to ditch the 4x4

Trade for a 2WD. You won't destroy a truck and you'll be able to upgrade to a much nicer truck since 2WD are worth less. And one of the wackos posting about converting their 2WD into 4WD will be saved a bunch of headaches. Everybody wins.

    ^^ this

Hell probably half the people in this country with part time 4wd never use it and probably forgot it's even there, same difference really minus the work of having to take it out.

If you never use it you'll likely never have to worry about all the maintenance associated with it
