I think it would still be financially smarter to sell buy prerunner and use leftover cash for the mods.

Ah ok now we're getting somewhere, check out @Torspd's build...if memory serves I think(?) he eliminated his front drivetrain as part of his build. He'll have to confirm though, he's got a huge build thread and an awesome custom turbo setup

I would think for that purpose you'd want to get rid of the transfer case and front diff too, they have weight.

Yes, listen to this guy. You have lots of value locked up in that 4WD system. If you remove it you destroy that value. Instead leverage it and put it back into a native 2WD truck.

If you were going to actually buy parts to do it... I'd take that money and spend it on a manual hub conversion instead. Then the only thing you're losing is not losing the weight of the transfer case, diff, driveshaft & axles. Losing the T-case is going to involve at least sourcing a 2WD trans & rear driveshaft (I'm sure you could arrange a swap with a Prerunner owner who wants to go the other way) and the labor involved, anyway... not worth it to shed maybe 70 pounds.

Quick & dirty, if you really wanted to, pull the CV shafts and gut them, reinstall the outer stubs in the hubs to hold the wheel bearings together, and you could either pop the inners back into the front diff to seal it up, or remove the whole front diff & front driveshaft. Bam, no parts required, the only thing you're losing out on is not being able to use Prerunner lift spindles.

But if you really want 2WD, +1 on just trading it for one. Otherwise, you're really just taking a truck you paid a premium for (or could sell for a premium even if you got a steal) and turning it into, at best, a truck that's worth a lot less, and at worst making a white elephant.

You're essentially neutering your truck. I'll have to confiscate your man card now

Honestly man if you wanna keep ur rig and do this shit you could take the front diff out and the accessories along with it, get the sos/tundra racing lowering kit, throw some 245s with 20”s get the magnuson supercharger, URD bolt ons.
    Get a solid driveshaft from a 2wd.
    Just throwin ideas....

half? I'm guessing its much more than that. It's probably at least 80% in California alone. People here on this site with 4wd who actually use it are the minority

I was gonna say that but you gotta figure all the people in the northern and eastern states that virtually all have 4wd and have to use it

Seriously tho, what is your true reasoning behind wanting to neuter a 4x4 truck? 2wd spindles from your friend.... are they just run of the mill maxtrac spindles or are we talking a full +6 LT DTF setup? The latter i can kinda understand (tho would still recommend selling the 4x4 and buying a 2wd to begin with)

California is more than just the Bay Area remember. The regions of CA littered with dirt roads and buried in snow all winter are bigger than many eastern states.

I had to look this Ranchero up to see what it looked like. Just curious on why not consider the XR, unless you're looking for a double cab setup (I couldn't tell from your avatar pic). Good luck on your project!

Turn it to a convertible while you are it, it only makes sense, then you would have the only tacoma looking jeep in the world:thumbsup:

I would go with the soft top too

Use my 4x4 multiple times a year thank you very much..... logging 15-40 days a year in the snow and ice covered roads in Mammoth / CA ski resorts.... as well as some sand duneage, time in the desert, general off road fuckery... alllllll of which id NEVER want to own a 2wd truck.

That stated, you are probably correct :D
