I have an '08 5.7L CrewMax Tundra I've owned since new, 85K on the clock now. I love it for its room and that super-sweet roll-down back window. Power is awesome, and I've never regretted buying it b/c it's done all I've asked/expected it to do. That is, I am realistic about gas mileage (22MPG between Charlotte and Fayetteville, NC) if I have a light foot, and didn't buy a comparably-priced Tacoma that year b/c frankly I needed the room (I was basically living out of my truck back then, attending a very long army course). I'd switched from a Suburban and ONLY wish I'd bought a shell/topper back when the Tundra was new. EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. that gets in the back seat of the CrewMax comments on the incredible amount of room back there--it's like a limo! And--bonus alert--there are actual AIR CONDITIONING VENTS back there, imagine that! I was in a King Ranch F-350's back seat this summer here in San Antonio, TX (it gets hot here from time to time) and I was shocked to discover that there were no AC vents whatsoever on such a high-end trim package!

I also have a 99 Tacoma SR5 Xtra Cab 4x4 and love it dearly...FOR WHAT IT IS. And a family hauler it ain't. So I have the family truckster (Tundra) and I have the family funster (Tacoma). Bottom line: if room is what you're needing, get the Tundra. You wanna keep shoehorning everyone/-thing into your vehicle, keep the Taco.

    Just my humble opinion, FWIW.

I'm assuming you have a double cab tacoma...

I have similar "requirements" as you: Car seat in the back + wife + "everyday cargo". My truck ends up being the family mover most of the time. With the car seat in the back behind the passenger seat, allowing us to use the LATCH system, it makes the front passenger seat almost useless. The front passenger seat has to slide really far up in order to get the car seat out of the back. What usually happens for shorter runs is just putting the bags in the front seat and/or floor in front of it.

For the longer runs with more stuff, I have one of these (http://www.mountainsmith.com/produc...ategoryId=45&subCategoryId=0&subCategory2Id=0), and it makes it very convenient to just store it in the area behind the back seats folded up when not in use, and load it up with bags in the bed when I need it.

I do have a softopper, but that only makes a difference if it's raining.

There are a ton of other options out there besides having less MPG and potentially a vehicle monthly payment. If you are really set on a Tundra, then pull the trigger. Just don't be surprised if you find yourself in a similar situation a year or two down the road.

The 4Runner provides more interior room, but even with my short bed double cab I have more cargo space in the bed than the 4Runner. Something else to consider if you take a lot of gear on trips.

It's simple, if you really need the extra room inside get an SUV but I have two young kids with a double cab & short bed & never have issues with room. The only issue I have is the need to get a topper to protect the things I put into the bed when the weather is bad. I have went back and forth on the idea of getting an SUV myself but I can make due with what I have with the right accessories just fine. If you want the bigger Tundra & can afford it then by all means go for it, it is awesome but yeah the mpg is HORRIBLE & worse then the Tacoma. Good luck!

If you can afford the tundra get it. I traded mine for the tacoma because it was way more truck than I needed. Was an awesome truck tho. 13 MPG, all parts are more expensive, oil changes cost more, everything costs more. If you can handle that then absolutely do it.
