285s should be the smallest. They're about 32x10.5 IIRC. 255/85 are about 33.8x10

Well I think I'm going 285s because I prefer a wider look but the 305s are like 14 pounds or so heavier than the 285s. Doesn't seem like much but with that rolling, it's a different monster. Plus that's about 60 lbs extra that I'll gain minimal lift from. But we shall see

They make a 285/75/17 in that tire if you want tall and wide-ish if you're willing to go to 17s

Only problem with 17s is that they look funny on 33s.

Nah no 17s for me, prefer more tire than rim.

    :luvya:

35's require cutting into the firewall, maybe down the road when it's not my DD. I couldn't handle getting that done in a weekend

I'm on the same page with 35s. I would love to do it, but I daily drive the Tacoma. However, for about the same cost, I could build an expo trailer and make the Taco more daily driver friendly and lose a ton of weight that would normally be on the Taco when I go out wheeling/camping. The only set back is the stupid California law that prohibits drivers who are trailering to exceed 55mph.

Plus it would Expo AF!

See that seems a lot more reasonable to do instead of 35's but they look great. Just look at @alee891 build  every time I see a pic of his I want 35's haha or 315's ;)

Looks aside, I love the performance of the larger footprint. 315s combined with 5.29s turns our rigs into absolute monsters over rough terrain. The added clearance makes traveling over large obstructions far more enjoyable as opposed to smashing the IFS skid into everything. Some may argue going to a larger tire takes the fun out of wheeling, I think it makes wheeling that much more fun. I can't wait until I get the front end locked down the road.

Also, I DD my rig and it gets around just fine. A little slow, yes, but I didn't build this pig just so I could stare at it - I enjoy driving it. I intend to get a beater this spring simply so that I can wrench on the rig and not have to worry about getting to work after the weekend is over. Aside from that, I'll drive it until it dies because TOYOTA.

Did you see any notable change in your mileage? Also with the bigger tire, how was the handling, and general control, of the vehicle on city roads?

My mileage didn't really change at all with the regear. I still average around 16mpg, granted I cruise at 65 on the interstate.
Handling and control is perfectly fine. I had a little slop when the tires were first installed, but an alignment fixed it all up. I'd still say there is a little play in the steering wheel itself (if that makes sense), but that isn't translated through the wheels. I have a leaky steering rack so I'm thinking that is likely the culprit.
Wear and tear is to be expected, but I haven't blown through anything or needed to replace parts yet. I'm sure wheel bearings will need to be done at some point. Especially because I'm at 172k.
