Just curious if anyone has ever had their 5vz completely rebuilt? I’ll most likely never get rid of my 1st gen, Engine only has 145k with no problems other than slight showing of some gaskets needing to be replaced. Just looking for what I should expect to pay and how long will I be out of a vehicle when I should ever choose to do it.

Is that your engine?! Crap that's clean!

As for rebuild, it's about $4k in parts I looked it up once, it's much better to just buy a low mile JDM or junkyard engine. Significantly cheaper.

Yeah, that was one of the few times, I detailed the engine bay. It doesn’t take that long, a good foam degreaser, light spraying with a garden hose and shop cloths and touched up with that stuff you buy at Auto zone that shines up black plastic. Took me a couple hours.
I was just reading a similar thread on TTORA and some guy said the same thing. You can buy a complete long block rebuilt one for cheaper due to all the labor it would cost for them to dismantle your engine bring it to a machinist, bore it out and put it all back together with new parts. I’d really love to buy the block and start from scratch just to learn for myself.

This is what it looked like after detailing it the day I bought her...

Might be the Valve cover gasket. Around 100k or so they start to leak. Not to hard to do.

I know of some people who have 300k plus here. Just keep up with timing belt and water pump changes and replace parts as needed. Pretty easy to work on overall

I was considering on doing the valve cover gaskets till I read a thread of a guy who did it and his truck had issues he couldn’t pinpoint. I’d really love to powder coat the valve covers a blue pearl

If I do a rebuild in the future this is who I’ll use.

$3100 for a long block isn’t too bad in my opinion, 2 year/24,000 mile warranty, and they have a great reputation

Yes, I’ve been on their website. I actually bought the header flange bolts from them when installing my TRD headers. Thank you!

That's pretty amazing, I've cleaned mine up a bit before but it's never looked that good.

303 on the plastics and rubbers helps a lot, what degreaser are you using?

if you bring it in, it is about 250-350 in labor. the guy who did my mom's one quoted me 350 but when i picked it up he charged me 275 because he said "it didn't take me as long as the book said" what a good mechanic right?

I honestly think it was the auto zone engine degreaser. The foam kind. I watched a video on YouTube from Chrisfix and just followed suit.

Yep! They're a dying breed, I wish all these new school business owners were taught by their Grandparents as I was. My G-pa would rather lose money than a customer and would take his customers out for doughnuts and coffee everyday, his services were affordable/good work and now that he's gone I try to be as much like the old timers. Nowadays its hard to beat em!, they could do it all plus everything was cheaper back then too, lol!

My vote would also be junkyard or JDM motor. That is my intention at the moment for my truck, just need the time. :annoyed:

From the looks of it I'd wager it'll be a while before you need a new engine anyway. Always good to see a well maintained 1st gen. Keep it up! :fistbump:

I have 442,000 miles on my '98 5-Lug. Absolutely no issues whatsoever. You should be fine for going without a rebuild for much longer.

I agree, I’m just thinking ahead. Eventually with preventative maintenance this truck will be brand new. It’ll most likely be when my build is “done” another thing so really want to do is change out LCA’s, LBJ’s inner and outer tie rods and both C.V. axles all oem. Not anytime soon, just something I’d feel good knowing it’s done.

I plan on keeping my truck (the much lower mileage '98 with only 92,000 miles) forever too, can't imagine getting rid of it. If I crash it or someone crashes it into me I'll probably turn it into a rock crawler. As long as I'm alive this thing will never see a junkyard.

If your engine isn't overheating or anything then I wouldn't bother going through the rebuilding process, just do your seals and headgaskets and you should be fine.
