back to the OP question "what the brain trust feels is a fair price for an oil change" You can also do it this way:
Labor time: .4 (20 min) see shop rate
    Material cost (oil) $4.50 a quart (bulk rate) X 6 = $27
    Material cost (filter) = $6.00
Shop labor (dealer) rate = $100-150 hr.

If I take the first shop labor rate ($100) I come out to $53.00 + tax ) your local tax may vary.
You do the math for your area.

Anything far and above that base, is how much the stealer thinks his expertise, services and value are worth.

Question you need to ask yourself is, how much do you think are those last three (expertise, services and value) are worth and are you good with it?

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I’ve never paid to have my oil changed. I would guess $50-60 would be a fair deal considering the cost of oil and labor.

Don’t forget you are also paying for them to check a bunch of other stuff. Washer fluid. Check brake pads etc.

That said my buddy just took his back in cause they impacted the filter housing on so tight he couldn’t break the seal with the aluminum tool he bought (from Toyota) he changes it in between Toyota care.

Had it done at the dealer for about $90, then I bought a special they were offering, $200 for 5 oil changes, which I think is a good deal.
Always changed my oil on my 2001, but have yet to change it on my 2016, I'm 5 changes in, getting lazy I guess :)

You can get $12 Rebates a few times a year on Mobil 1, runs about $23 at Wal-Mart, I usually buy a couple jugs and keep them stashed away and it's half the cost of Amazon oil.

I am a big fan of DIY, but these quick lube places have made it so easy and cheap that I can't justify the time to do it myself for a marginal cost savings. Even that savings I question because if you do it yourself you lose that valuable Carfax stamp showing you changed the oil.

My Tacoma will be the first vehicle I've ever owned that I won't change the oil in myself, due to not wanting to fall into a gray area with my warranty.

Local dealership charges around $55 with tax.

I could care less about the CarFax....doesn't add any more or less value than the guy DIY and keeping receipts and a record. I like doing it myself. I use a Mityvac oil extractor and while that is draining the oil I drain the oil filter canister and change the filter. Add in new oil...pump the old oil back into the oil canister's I used and done. Easy peasy and clean. Plus when using the Super Tech oil or Amazon oil I use now I can do a full synthetic change for about $25....

I do agree the quick lube places can be cheap with the right coupon or sale.

I write every oil change in my manual, with mileage, date, and brands used.

I guarantee you this is worth more to a potential buyer than Carfax oil changes. I know for a fact that this practice has yielded more $$ on motorcycles I've sold.

That's actually a killer deal. $41.25 per oil change is worth it if you value your time and convenience. Oil changes are a easy DIY job. But you gotta factor in buying 2x 5 quarts the first time. Oem tacoma filters in bulk to save money and a toyota specific oil filter wrench. Then it's a messy job and you have to recycle your oil afterwards. If you live in an apartment or condo that doesnt let you wrench then your sol. Sometimes the dealership or mechanic is the way to go.

If I were buying from an individual, I agree. The problem is in this internet world that you won't get the look. People scan the internet and Carfax reports are prominently displayed. I would probably pass by a car that has no history showing in the report because there are too many cars to consider that is an easy exclusion. That is the same mindset a sales manager or someone looking at auction will think as well. There is no way to tell if it is a person that cares so much that they do the work themselves or someone that is just to lazy to get the work done at all. Considering there are probably more people in the later category, it wouldn't be worth the risk.

I have just done the second freebie for my truck, at a whopping 9K miles. I have always been a big DYI and still do my own OC's on the Corvette and Avalon. I think due to the fact the Taco will only need yearly OC's, this may be the first new vehicle that goes to the dealer for the OC's and the included tire rotations etc.
