That's chilly for Georgia. Here it was 40 when I was messing with it last. Next day went in to the deep freeze.

I had a heck of a time with mine after my last dealer change. Used the Motive tool and a breaker bar. When I got it off I found the filter was crushed down a bit. They had put a filter in that was too tall and then cranked it down super tight to get it to fit. Replaced the housing with the metal one and now do my changes so no more problems.

i wonder if a little grease around the perimeter would do better than the thin 0w20 oil

This is what I did, I used a Ryobi Mid-Torque Impact. I have done this on both my Tacoma and a friends Camry. It came out easy with no damage to the housing. The plastic took it like a champ.

I replaced it with the Aluminum housing, but I'm pretty sure the plastic housing can be used indefinitely.

Do you use the Lithium spray lube and do you put it on the plastic threads and the o-ring or what?

The problem with the plastic filter housing is that it has much less friction than the aluminum housing. The wrench has a very hard time grabbing the material if its over torqued. A good trick is to put a piece of paper inside the filter wrench, paper is an abrasive material and will help the wrench grab the slippery plastic. That said if your have trouble getting the housing off, its been over torqued. The housing is o-ring sealed and has a locking tab, and so requires very little torque to seal and stay in place. Plastic has naturally high lubricity (this is what makes them hard to get off) and should not need a lubricant on the threads. If you are tightening the housing without a torque wrench and are using any muscles past your elbow you are going to hard and will have trouble getting it off. FYI the dealers wouldn't know a torque wrench if it hit them on the head and ALWAYS over torque these housing like 4 or 5 times what they need to be at, don't use there torque as a metric for how tight it should be. Aluminum housing are much better, its much easier to tell when the threads have bottomed out and the filter wrench has a much easier time grabbing the housing.

Never used the spray before. And it just goes on the o rings. I've always used it on the rubber parts and outside of traditional filters. If the housing was totally metal I'd put a tiny tiny amount of anti seize on the threads. Being plastic, white lithium won't hurt it but it's not necessary. Just don't over torque. A little bit of white lithium/anti seize goes a long way. It's like thread locker... No need to use a ton.

This is not how the wrench works on 3rd gen filter housing and other toyotas.
There are notches on the wrench that you line up with ridges on the housing.

The ridges don't carry any load, all the work is done by the flats in the bottom part of the wrench.

Yep. I just did my first oil change coming off Toyota Care. I used an aftermarket tool that leverages the ridges and cracked the overtorqued housing. The right factory cup from Toyota and a 1/2 breaker bar got it off. My SA bought the new housing for me which was awesome of him. +1 on the right tool for the job.

shouldn't need any kind of spray, just the correct torque and you shouldn't have any problems. when was the last time you saw a lube tech with a torque wrench?

    100%.

I never let the dealer do any maintenance and so far had zero issues with the housing. It really takes 5 extra minutes versus the old school oil filter.

Threads like these make me just want to do the Baxter oil filter adapter + Toyota OEM Spin on filter and just be done with it. Pricey up front but long term I think it would be worth the hassle.
