I will have to try that. Also order the new motivX filter wrench. The new design looks a little better.

The later motivx tool has tighter fitting flutes to grip the housing, and hasn't those finger cutouts that grab the housing's plastic ears. Motivx claimed too many housing's were being cracked by the older tool causing leaks.

The older version is what I have. At the time it was to be the most recommended one. Sucks to have to buy a new one when that one was hardly used but oh well.
I also think it was harder with the skid plate to be sure you have the old version lined up with with the tabs.

    Yeah.
Yeah, it can seem like it is seated when it isn't fully seated. If it's fully seated and the cartridge is not over-torqued, I don't think it would cause an issue. Now that I know and have done a few changes, the cartridges come off pretty easily and it doesn't worry me.

I was looking around online and decided to order the new motivX filter wrench, with the drain thing and their fancy funnel.
I wanted the filter drain tool with the tube since the plastic one I had got last year on Amazon was basically trash. It was $48.95 for those two or $59.95 for the funnel also. I did a little googling and found the promo code MUDDY for 10%off. Brought the total with free shipping to $53.96.
Thought I'd share that in case anyone wants to get some tools from www.motivxtools.com

I cheaped out just buying the wrench. I figure for what that extra stuff cost, i could afford some oil running down my arm. I'd rather save it for beer money.

I only bought the wrench when I bought the previous version. I can relate to saving some coin for beer. I thought that last time. However since the knock off drain tool was nice but didn't really work properly I decided to get the real thing. Then it was only a few dollars more for the fancy funnel so why not even though a $1.49 one from harbor freight would be fine.

I found this thread because I just experienced this today. I did my first oil change myself at home, had no issues getting anything apart. The dealer did the next oil change because of ToyotaCare. I did another one today, and the dealership must've cranked that housing on there like their life depended on it. I had to grab by neighbors huge breaker bar to get it removed. After putting it back together, discovered that the plastic housing cracked and oil was leaking out. Went to the dealership to get a new housing and I found out they have aluminum ones now, not plastic, so I bought one of those and all is well now.

Does anyone have experience with the aluminum oil filter cap housings vs the plastic?

I have heard that they can get cracked or the ears broken off too.

I just got the updated motivX tools and have the aluminum cap on stand by too.

The aluminum ones are much better, its much easier to "Feel" wear the threads bottom out and therefor much harder to over torque. The plastic one tighten much easier after its bottomed out.

My question is does to flat metal cover on the plastic one fit the aluminum cap. My aluminum one did not come wit that part. I don't see why it wouldn't be the same.

i am shopping for filter wrench in canada.
11 sided is important factor correct?
anyone know if the 64mm aluminum wrench from Princess auto works ok?
i looked at Canadian tire plastic, but am leery because the 11 sides were not formed well.

    It's 14 flutes or sides. 64.3mm
This is the new motivX filter wrench I just bought for next time. 20220424_103614.jpg 20220424_103626.jpg

This is the old design that works well if the filter isn't cranked on too much. It is known so they say to snap off the ears on plastic covers it it slips or isn't on correctly.
    20220424_103649.jpg

I checked the new one with the spare aluminum cap I have now also and it fits well.

Tip: I use a socket vs a ratchet (i.e. 6 sided outer nut) so I can get a better fit when I 'break' the housing loose.
    Works like a champ!

That's true. Used it on the old one too still difficult after it was put on buy the incredible hulk.
The new design I can tell is going to be better just from the test fit to my spare. It's a 24mm or 15/16 socket
