Save your $500 and give it to me!! :D I had a crack on my windshield also and what I did was take my truck to Toyota for the noise from the weather stripping TSB and they replaced the entire windshield and weather stripping free of charge!!!!

Wow, hm that sounds like an idea. Do you really think they'd replace the whole windshield just because of that TSB?

They did for me so I dont see why not, the TSB calls for a new windshield and Weather strip. And if you dont have the TSB issue just take it in during rush hour so they can't get the truck up to speed.

    x3 on USAA.

Aside from that, every insurance company I've had has a different deductible for glass coverage. Usually it's separate and less than 50 bucks.

I have USAA & still have to pay my comprehensive deductible.
The last time I replaced a windshield it was in my Tundra & the glass shop had coupons waiving the deductible. I think they make a killing on an insurance claim.
In my Tacoma I had a chip fixed right away (put tape over it to keep out the contaniments) & last winter it let go & cracked all the way across....the warranty on the chip repair was only a year.
Now in the market myself for a windshield & want a good shop so subscribing to this thread....

I had Safelite remove and reseal a windshield on an '85 Ford, the work was good, no more leaks.

I was just back at that same shop this AM to have a chip repaired on our Lexus. $110, vs. the $49 from the local outfit down the street. Trouble with the locals--they couldn't do it right now, and Safelite did it while I bored the guy up front to death with BS stories. Plus, Safelite did theirs with a machine system--not sure if the local was the manual system, and not sure if the differences the guy claimed really matter. But, it's done and if it cracks, I get the $110 towards a new windshield as long as we own the car.

As always, not pleased to hear the bad news about them, but apparently, my mileage varied on this one....

I looked up the TSB and it said it calls for the windshield to be resealed.. not a new windshield replacement

I'm pretty certain mine was replaced with OEM glass from a local glass shop and it costed me $220 total. (I can't go check right now)

My insurance covers glass under comprehensive and my deductable was $200, I lowered it after the 1st windshield so I wouldn't have to pay full price again.

My original windshield got hit with a rock and cracked all the way across. My 2nd one has been hit and has a small hole that hasn't spread yet. I wish they would change the insurance to cover glass for free since we have construction 365/24/7 .

I think the problem is that it is not easy to remove an existing windshield without cracking it.

The glass they replace it with for about $220 is supposedly 'identical' to the OEM shield, black dots and all, but minus the 'Toyota' logo.

I chipped mine about a month ago right in my sight line and the quote i was given for teh OEM from Safelite was $1054.00 (No kidding, she asked me if i was sitting down before telling me) or the one she discribed as 'the exact same windshield without 'Toyota' on it' for about $220.00.

:notsure: I'll have to look when I can, you are probably right, but its held up better than the original one that was in there...and it wasn't safelite glass. It has the black dots and the fading tint area on the top, looks exactly like the original. I'll ask when I go to get this one replaced. ;)

alot of insurance companies will cover chip repairs for free. This helps on cutting down on claims for new windshields.

I've got to put a windshield in my Tacoma. I spoke with the dealer and while they said they would be happy to sell me a Toyota windshild for over $500 (before install), they use aftermarket windshields. There is no difference from a safety standpoint and it is difficult to see a difference. If the dealer subs it to their supplier, the dealer provides the warranty for installation. The aftermarket windshielf is $350 installed. Good luck with whatever you decide.

What states have you lived in?? And have you updated your insurance for each state you have gone to??

Also-repaired and replaced are different things-There are 4 states that I can verify that legally require windshield replacement-I can't find any information about repairs. But I'm sure it's cheaper for them in the long run to pay 100 bones for some epoxy vice 4-8 hundred for a new glass

The OPs windshield will need to be REPLACED if the crack is as large as he was indicating.

Some states apparently have mandated free glass coverage. We have it here in SC. To me, it's a huge scam because many of these glass places will actually pay YOU to replace your glass. I had a cracked windshield in a previous vehicle and they paid me $35 to do the work. Crazy.

This is going to sound nuts to most but I wish I had to pay for windshield replacement!

In Massachusetts, BY LAW, all auto insurance has to cover glass (broken or not). The result being that auto insurance is very expensive and since all glass is "free" with no deductible, people everywhere replace glass "just because", a bug hit the windshield.

Tons and Tons of windshield repair shops are around and they pretty much pay the auto owner off to come to their shop to replace glass. Gift Certificates, red sox tickets, etc.. They come right to your house, your work.

Anyways, if the consumer had to pay for it, our rates would be lower and and tons of corruption could be avoided. However, that's an oxymoron since I live in Massachusetts.

if you have full coverage insurance check with your insurance company...some states as long as your are fully covered you can get the insurance to replace the windshield at $0 cost to you...other states require you to pay the deductible...but I would definitely check with your insurance company...

couple of my buddies from florida and texas had cracked windshield from rock getting kicked up from semis and bigger trucks....they got em replaced free of charge...

good luck bro and keep us posted...

Yeah...The post I quoted was in response to one where I said the same thing. I've found proof that 4 states require no deductible glass replacement...2 for only the front windshield, and 2 for any glass.

Many companies will provide epoxy repairs for free because they are cheaper than a replacement, even if you do pay a deductible. and I asked about updating his policy because as you move state to state, even the the registration on your truck stays in one state...you need to change the policy to the state where the truck is "garaged" or "used primarily"

Sorry...I walked away and I forget where I was going with this...
