Just wondering if op changed the oil after the head gasket change ?
Possible coolant in the oil washing down the cylinders which creates a low compression issue .
May explain why it starts on starting fluid but not on gas

If the timing was off could it run on starting fluid and not gas ?

I keep coming back to a timing issue, idk.

I don't know if you're still looking for input, but I've been messing with a 94 jeep wrangler lately and. One of the things I like to do with sitting cars is to take out the injectors, pour a little fuel cleaner into them, and (using some female mini quick disconnects and some 12-16g wire) jumper each injector to the battery. Then, when energized, I blow the cleaner through. Orally. it's very intimate.
With the injectors on the jeep, when I blew too hard and the injector was too full, the fuel would come out in a stream.
Getting closer to the end, it'd mist.
I've done this on a couple cars, our tacoma included though i hardly remember. generally I'd say if pressure is too high, the fuel can stream instead of mist. and that stream aint very flammable. I dont know whats causing your high fuel pressure, but I think that could be a no start by itself.

EDIT: One last thing to add.. I assume you have the 6cyl engine, so mine ain't the same. Is there anyone here that could upload some pics of the fuel rail/s and associated hosery? On our 2.7 there's some little check ball valve looking sh*ts hangin off the rail, and when looking at it I couldn't tell if it was frontwards or backwards.. I think your answer (as others have stated) will be hidden in assembly of components/connectors that weren't the main focus of the service performed (I say this because of the unusual nature of the fault)

just curious if the crankshaft timing gear could have been left off or installed backwards. then the crank sensor would not be picking up engine rotation. have seen it done to a 5.4 ford motor. also are the injector plugs on the right injectors. 4,3,2,1 instead of 1,2,3,4 /

I guess since we’re throwing ideas around.
Is there any way the exhaust is being restricted?
I’ve know a severely restricted exhaust (converters usually) can cause misfires.

All the components are there for a working engine.
But are they all there at the right time?

I guess if a guy had some good equipment, you could use a pressure transducer in place of a plug, sync it to the crank position, an ignition coil and a fuel injector. Then see when each is firing compared to the others.

I know this is kind of how they diagnose timing issues with out tearing the engine down.

Something is off here, either really complicated or really simple:confused:

OP says the plugs are wet when pulled.
I honestly don’t know what over pressure would cause,
My guess would be a rich condition, if in fact the injectors are working?

So I towed it to a buddy’s shop We hooked up his snap on scanner and eliminated a bunch of possibilities including the crank position sensor It showed that it was operating but the cam position sensor on the VVTi was not showing it was working checked power at the connector and it has power going into it can someone with the 2.7l take off their cam position sensor and see if it beeps on an ohms tester because I’ve bought 3 from a parts house and they are not showing resistance

are you sure your meter is set right? leads in proper place for ohms reading? ohms reading is supposed to be 1060-1645

Bit of a long shot, but could the OP be checking the harness side resistance rather than the sensor side? According to the sheet @Jimmyh posted, that is <1ohm, which would likely read as '0', especially on a cheap meter.
