Hi, my 2013 taco keeps throwing the code for crankshaft sensor when I kick down the gas pedal like entering the highway. It runs and starts fine , I can take my time with the gas pedal and there is no issue except when I bring the rpm up fast to get to higher speed. The battery is getting a little old but starts the truck with no problems. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you rectify. This is the v6 engine.

What is the exact code(s) it's setting?

That would be P0335 (Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit), it sets when the ECM does not see the proper crank sensor signal.

This would be very hard to properly diagnose without a 4 channel scope to see what the cam and crank sensor signals look like.

The engine will not run without a crank sensor signal, does it cut out when the code sets?

No, it still runs fine. I did have an issue over the summer with the passenger side vvt selonoid so I replaced only that one and not the drivers side one I left it alone. The vvt dtc has gone away and the truck shifts like new again.

The fact that it doesn't cut out could suggest something else is going on like noise in the crank signals or one of the cam signals, really no way to tell without having a scope connected and rolling during the event then looking at the waveforms.

The only thing I know that you may check is make sure your alternator isn't putting out alot of AC ripple, you can check that with a meter set to volts AC and check between the main stud of the alternator and the alternator case with the engine running and some loads turned on. Should be less than 100mV.

It very well could be a cam or crank sensor failing but with the amount of work involved in changing the crank sensor I'd want to be certain.
