At age 69, no engineering degree, and with limited "wheel time" on my wife's 2018 Model 3, I haven't had much time using the button on the steering wheel to explore what voice commands are possible. Having too much fun turning on the dancing lights feature just updated as part of the long list of "freebies" Tesla is often adding. Hell, 90% of the updates I have no idea what they are! Have you explored the Tesla Motors Club site? Most members are very forgiving for some of the dumb questions I have asked.

In addition to the S3XY buttons, this is coming out soon, a little bit more OEM-ish in look.

Mine is set to advanced updates, but I'm not there yet, I got a minor one for 2022.44. The auto heated steering wheel on that update seems like a no-brainer. I wish they'd add auto heated seats for the rear based on passenger detection. If the vehicle efficiency strategy is to use heated seats to supplement cabin heat, it seems odd to leave the rears out. I turn it on manually, but then they don't auto roll back like the automatic setting.

I'm in a few groups. One of the challenging things with a Tesla is somethings are not intuitively discoverable and you don't know what you don't know. I always read the release notes on updates, there is a handy link at the bottom of the phone app right next to the listing for what software version you are on.

We didn’t receive an extended free trial and I’m genuinely torn on if I’m willing to die on the MyQ hill or rolling over for the sake of appeasing the boss. $149 for 5 years sure is a lot cheaper than couples therapy…..

HomeLink can be accessed and controlled via the Tesla app! This means that even if the house power has failed and wifi is down, if cell service works and the Tesla is parked within range of the garage door, it can use its direct RF communication to open the door. I'll often leave on a small hike or bike ride from my place and prefer not to take keys. MyQ allows this using the phone to control the doors as long as there isn't a service interruption in the internet service, or a power outage doesn't take down the wifi router disabling the doors, effectively locking you out. With access to direct HomeLink communication via the Tesla app, the car is essentially a backup key to the house using your phone.

I've pulled the trigger on HomeLink and have the install set 10 days out. It used to be a mobile install at your house but now it is a service center install. Less convenient than it was I think a month ago.

    IMG_0883.jpg

If she's happy with it go for the MyQ option for sure. MyQ is cheaper than the HomeLink solution and $150/5yrs isn't bad to keep the other half happy. I just take personal issue with a subscription to operate my door I've already paid for and have issues with the system reliability for my use.

Wall charger is scheduled to be installed on 2/17.

A benefit in addition to faster charging, is the ability to comfortably run the battery lower. Since for optimal battery life of the Li batteries found in the Long Range and Performance should ideally averaging near 50% charge. I try to do this to some extent, but with the ability to only charge at home at 16A 110v currently, the charge time becomes very long if the battery is low, which then requires more planning ahead and less comfort letting the battery get too low. With the ability to charge at 48A the car can charge much quicker, meaning I’m more comfortable running the battery lower around town knowing I can fully recharge in several hours vs 2 days on 110v.

I know you aren’t DIY’ing but I just did my dad’s Tesla charger to replace his leaf charger. Straightforward other than the headache of concrete sleeves.

Physical install of the charging unit if replacing an existing one is easy. Tying multiple circuits on a main panel to feed a single circuit on a charger is more questionable. I’d do the former without hesitation, not so much the later.

Not really a fan of the sentry lighting update. It doesn't get your attention, which kinda defeats the point IMO.

I can see both sides here

Another Sentry Mode improvement is about to be introduced in update 2023.2. When Sentry Mode is enabled, the system will no longer blind passers-by with its bright headlights. Instead of full-on panic mode, it will now emit a gradual pulse of the headlights, ramping them up and down as a sort of warning. Hopefully, this stealthy, calm way of handling the problem will result in fewer surprised people being forced into the spotlight. It will also help when viewing Sentry Mode clips by not washing out the surroundings due to the bright flashes.”

I like the “It will also help when viewing Sentry Mode clips by not washing out the surroundings due to the bright flashes” portion

Yeah, I saw that. But instead no one even notices. The cars headlights are so low, I don't think blinding standing people was really a thing as the light is low-mid thigh height. Maybe for cars parked on the street. Camera wash out is fair, but it is only momentary.

If it’s crap, they’ll update it again I’m sure. They’ll hear the voicing and fix it (hopefully)

Fascinating. I just noticed this in the garage. If you pull the high beam lever back for temporary 'flash to pass' it activate the high beam portion of the pattern as one would expect. If you push the high beam level forward to activate the high beams and leave them on, the headlights rotate and shift the entire beam pattern up in addition to activating the high beam portion of the pattern. Standing outside of the car while activating the high beams you can hear the motors in the headlights move the assembly and see the entire pattern rotate upward.

Yeah, saw that too. I've noticed that as well on other Teslas. Uncertain if it is due to the auto high beam programing with the lights in cloudy/shady conditions and turning on the high beam unless oncoming lights are detected, which most wouldn't run unless dark so the car leaves the high beams on. Or it could be excessive light spill on the low beams. Tesla pushed an update about 2 months ago to improve the sensitivity of the auto high beams. I'm pretty sure it isn't aiming. However, the sentry light flash only happens when you walk within ~2' of the car. It isn't like it is going to blind you flashing the lights at your thighs from 2' away.
