Has anyone added cruise control to their 1st gen 3rz? If so, what is the best kit? Thanks!

Mine has a after market brand "Rosta" on it, it was on the Tacoma when I bought it last year, works fine. Get on Ebay & search "Rosta" & see what they have. And Google Rosta also.

I choose to install an OEM CC by scrounging parts from wrecking yards.

The Toyota PT474-35981 kit that made by Aisin is the one I choose. I liked this kit for a couple of reasons:
All of the parts were made for Toyota by one of their favored suppliers.
    It is vehicle specific.
Everything fit well and is of high quality.
The actuator fits behind the gas pedal instead of the engine compartment.

This kit was installed by dealers; not the factory. It is not made by Rosta.

It is probably no longer available.

Some on this forum have good luck getting all of the bits from a parts donor with the same engine and transmission.

I believe the late 2003 and all 2004 engines have electrical throttle control so it might be just a matter of getting the cruise control switch installed. Maybe someone else knows.

You will find a ton of good information when you search this forum.

I just finished installing OEM cruise control on my 2001 with the 5VZ-FE and automatic transmission. The process should be similar. There are several guides here on TW that were extremely helpful.
For me, I only needed 4 components as my vehicle had the factory harness necessary.

1 - Cruise Control Actuator in engine bay (cable connects to throttle body)
2 - Cruise Control Module in passenger kick panel below glove box (there were two spare plugs, one was used for the module)
3 - Steering wheel switch - Note: will likely require cutting the plastic casing on the back / side of the steering wheel (supposedly some 2003 Tacomas have the knockout, haven't verified). Also, there are two version of switches. The one I initially pulled from a ]96 4Runner had 3 wires (gree, blue, black) + the airbag wire. The one that worked for mine was only 2 wires (red and white) + airbag wire. I don't know if the 3RZ is the same though.
4 - Brake light switch - difficult to get to - the factory switch only has 2 contact pins in it, although the truck's harness had 4 slots on the connector. You will need to swap the switch out for a 4 pin version.
5 - ** IF you have a manual transmission, you will also need a clutch switch I believe. I'd look through the other guides to be sure. I also can't guarantee this system works well with manuals as I have an A/T.

Before you start buying stuff or cutting into your steering wheel shroud, I would check under the hood along the passenger side fender behind the air box. If there is a plug that is taped or zip tied down, then it is most likely for the actuator. The other thing to check is the connector in the kick panel for the module.

    Guides I mentioned:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/add-factory-cruise-control-to-your-1st-gen-tacoma.6621/
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...on-2004-v6-4x4-manual-trans-with-pics.341438/
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2001-tacoma-cruise-control-install.336686/
And depending on whether or not the cruise control light bulb is preinstalled in the dash, you may need this.

Many people recommend that you use a single donor vehicle for the entire system. I tried to do this, however the 1996 4Runner that I pulled parts from had a different cruise control switch in the steering wheel and a different cruise control module (wasn't in the kick panel like mine, was behind the dash and had the wrong connector).

Except for the switch in the steering wheel, everything was literally plug and play for me. Hopefully this info helps!

Edit: Oh yeah, it cost me around $250 in parts (combination from a local donor vehicle and eBay).

    Good point multimediavault.
My 2003 2.4l has all the cruise control wiring installed. But the kit I bought from Toyota bypasses all of that for some reason.
