I'm curious about the 50 state emission compliance. My understanding is that the exhaust system is a part of that compliance (cats or urea). In my mind, it wouldn't be worth doing so long as my current engine works. I've looked into this in the past and it usually comes down to the fact that I can buy a hell of a lot of gasoline for the price of doing the swap.

I agree on not trying it as long as the current engine still runs, but the cummins crateengine claims it will be 50 state emissions compliant

Even on TW where everybody "would spend $50k on a diesel Tacoma," only a few say that without being a bullshitter.

The "demand" is higher than the reality.

Even at $7k for a swap, I doubt more than a few do it on here. Kiss your warranty goodbye!

I've wanted to put a 4BT in my TJ for a long time. When the ol' 4banger finally dies, I will. She has 220,000 on the clock and still runs like a sewing machine.

I think the install would be a lot more than 2k, electronics, emissions.I would love to have a diesel Tacoma.

I doubt anyone would attempt it still under warranty, however I think Toyota is going to have to make a step towards diesel since the Colorado is now offered with a diesel and the ranger is making a comeback possibly with a diesel

I also wouldn't mind putting a 4Bt in the 83' in my sig. I think that would be pretty sweet.

I realize the idea of a Diesel in a Taco is a recurring theme on this forum, but I don't see why anyone would choose this engine over a gas-powered LS1 GM V8 swap. The LS1/LS6 swaps are huge in the hotrodding scene. You can see LS engine swaps in old Jagaurs, Ferraris, Muscle cars, pickups...pretty much any vehicle you can think of has had an LS swap done to it. It's been done so many times it's cliche'. It's a great crate motor and I think it would be a much better candidate for an engine swap than a Diesel of any kind.

Check out what @DOUBLLD is building if you don't believe me...

The diesel option in the Colorado will take over 150,000 miles to pay for itself. At least that was the case with the difference in fuel prices and economy when I did the math about a year ago.

I agree the ls1 is an awesome engine and would also be awesome in a tacoma, I just think there is a split in people who would opt for a diesel option over the ls, just as people opt for ford or chevy... or Toyota. There's evidence in favor of both arguments. People just have different opinions. I would personally prefer a diesel for the fuel enconomy, the reliability, and the simplicity. I'm the type of person who prefers simple tried and true technology over fancy and flashy. If I could get my hands on the older mechanical Diesel engines that run with two wires... I would drop it in the tacoma in a heart beat. But I know the ls is one of the most popular engines in the world and for good reason, I would just rather have a Diesel.

That's interesting. I've ever honestly looked into them or the price difference, but 150k shouldn't be too difficult to do with any new vehicle. Esp with a diesel

I know some people like the diesel for perceived fuel savings, but for true diesel fans it is not about that; it is the diesel power at lower revs, sound, smell etc. I grew up with diesel Hilux and Land Cruisers, and for the same money I would take a base model diesel over a top of the line gas truck - some people are willing to pay extra for leather seats, sound systems etc. Likewise, I am willing to pay extra for a diesel, just because that is what I like and what I want.
